Authors Must Find Their Tribe

Writers write for themselves – perhaps for one or more of these reasons: ego, money, and a sense of purpose. They also write for others -- to impact lives and enlighten, educate, inspire, or entertain others. They hope their words will change the world and be their legacy. But no matter an author's goals, desires, and even fantasies, they must acknowledge one certain truth: Your book won’t be bought or read unless it is marketed often and well. To do that, writers must find a tribe.

A tribe is a group or a following. Think of it as a fan base. Who will be your people? Just exactly who is your book for? Think about your readers’:

·         Race

·         Age

·         Gender

·         Education

·         Location

·         Wealth

·         Intellect

Then think of existing tribes -- religion, politics, sports, and other loyalty group identity. You can form your own tribe by extracting people from other tribes.

If you don’t know who your book is for or why certain people would read it, you are screwed. If you mistakenly think your book is for everyone, think again. You need to realize your book, at best will be read by less than 1% of the country, but that 1% could mean as many as 3.37 million people could be your targeted reader. Figure out who will buy the book once they hear about it - and put all of your efforts into marketing only to them.

Acknowledge your tribe’s:

·         Whereabouts

·         Influences

·         Limitations

·         Needs

·         Desires

·         Traits

Get a message about your book that is packaged in a way to appeal to your tribe. Send it, over and over to the members of your tribe. They are your world. Focus on nothing else. Give up on trying to convince most people that your book deserves attention. They won’t give a shit.

But serval million may actually care. The other 99% should be dismissed and never thought about again. It takes a tribe to sell a book.
