Interview With Author Marjorie C. Davis

1. What inspired you to write this book? The material in the book was written in 1959 in letters to my mother.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? The book records 3 months camping in a remote section of western North Carolina, adjacent to where the final section of the Blue Ridge Parkway was being constructed.  It pictures the life and customs of a few scattered Appalachian mountain families and describes a way of life that is largely gone forever.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? It is my hope that readers will gain an appreciation for the life and times of all Appalachian highlanders who are part of the rich fabric of Americana.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The title, which I chose, is an exact description of the material in the book.  The cover was designed by Page Publishing and it fits the narrative.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? This is the only book I have ever published so I do not feel qualified to give advice. I would, however, encourage non-fiction writers to write from the heart.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? In our fast paced, ever changing, society, I see a longing for less stressful and simpler times.  There is also a great need for knowledge and appreciation of our American heritage and history. We learn great lessons from those who have gone before.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?  A love of history, a desire to learn about the experiences of the people who helped America grow into a great nation.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to?  I grew up in a culture where letter writing was taught and practiced everywhere.  I always enjoyed writing and describing events that I thought would be interesting and informative to others.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? Because the book is a day-to-day account of my activities and perceptions, I had to overcome the challenge of revealing so much of myself, and hope that I truthfully portrayed the mountain people with admiration and affection.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? My book can be easily read in a single sitting.  Those who have read it, have enjoyed it and found it difficult to stop reading once begun

About The Author: I taught in public Middle Schools for 18 years and was the Principal of a public Middle School for the following 15 years.  My teaching career covered 7 states. I retired from teaching in 1991. I have traveled extensively and have agricultural interests.
