The Author Checklist For Success

There are always discussions about what makes for a successful person. How much is nature vs. nurture, environment and wealth vs. DNA? For authors, the following attributes is what everyone needs to be successful:

1.      Mindset: Do you act confidently and with conviction? Are you opportunistic? Do you hustle, assert, initiate, and push? Are you resilient to rejection? Persevere, optimism, and acting with a sense of urgency.

2.      Resources: Beyond money and time, do you have other resources or access to people with resources that can help you in your pursuit of book riches?

3.      Strategy: Nothing succeeds like a good strategy. This means you need to have vision, be able to anticipate, and then to navigate in a timely and effective way around all obstacles and assumed challenges.

4.      Skills: Your ability to communicate, use technology, work with people, and manage others, are key skills that will be called upon to market a book well.

5.      Knowledge: What you know about anything will help you, but especially about the book world and media industry will be most helpful. you need to know what’s possible, what’s probable, and to prioritize.

6.      Networker: Who you know is more important than what you know. Always network – online and in-person – and call upon that network for favors.

7.      Time Conscious: Having time to write and market your book is precious. Manage your commodity well. Time management will save you headaches and bring you many benefits.

8.      Money Savvy: Money makes the world go round. you need it to invest in your book’s publication and marketing. Make a budget, spend wisely but do spend. It takes money to make money.

9.      Experienced: Whatever has happened in your life can give you perspective and valuable knowledge/skill/friends, so them ore that you have done, even if it is unrelated to books, can help you as an author.

10.  Ideation/Creativity: Your ability to come up with many good ideas quickly – and to be creative in your approaches will serve you well as an author.

11.  Planner: All success comes down to executing a good plan. That comes with actually having a plan. Be focused and organized.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
