The Pain Of Author Glory

In Hollywood, there are plenty of nude scenes or close-ups of select body parts. Actors and actresses put themselves out there, on display in a place of vulnerability. As a television viewer or movie theater guest, we may not often think about what goes into flawlessly pulling off this visually-arresting, screen-grabbing moment, but we thoroughly enjoy them.  I believe the same is true when it comes to books that move or entertain us.

We don’t fully realize what an author went through to write his or her book. We just are glad the book exists, regardless of the price paid by an author. Some writers have had to confront a screwed-up past in order to write the kind of books that they do. Others struggle with current physical challenges or mental handicaps. And many suffer from an addiction, seeking to battle their demons while writing memorable and impactful books.

There are multiple sacrifices or pains that authors may have experienced or continue to experience. These events, challenges, and people in their lives are perhaps what help the author write so well.

We should thank our authors for not only finding a way to endure and survive their physical pains, losses, and psychological traumas, but for being able to speak up and write about, because of, or in spite of, such challenging experiences.

Authors are human and to be human is tragic. If great books can sprout from terrible situations, the least we can do is read these books and feel, learn, and grow from them. Thank you to all of the writers who were able to funnel their life’s darkest moments — and endure afflictions — to leave us with stimulating books that can nurture our souls.
