Costco Abandons Books. Who’s Next?


Costco plans to stop selling books in 2025, except for during the holiday shopping period, from September through December, according to published reports. The company of mega-warehouses says it has 876 warehouses worldwide, including 600 in the United States, 108 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, and 4 in Puerto Rico.

 

It has almost as many US-based warehouses as there are Barnes & Noble stores, though Costco doesn’t sell nearly as many books as them.

 

The New York Times reported:  “Costco's shift away from books have come largely because of the labor required to stock books, the executives said. Copies have to be laid out by hand, rather than just rolled out on a pallier as other products often are at Costco. The constant turnaround of books - new ones come out every Tuesday and the ones that have not sold need to be returned — also created more work.”

 

Costco sells mostly discounted best-sellers and only represents a fraction of all books sold by the book industry. But no one wants to lose any channels for selling books. Will competitors like Target or Wal-Mart follow suit— or will they double down to fill the void?
