How Authors Should Live By The 10X Rule!

Are authors failing to achieve their goals, realize their dreams, and become successful simply because they fail to reach beyond the realm of what most people will try to do?

According to author Grant Cardone, famous for best-selling The 10X Rule, people would be far more successful if they supersized what they did – radically increasing their number of generated emails, ideas, connections, and activities – so that they can break through whatever seems to hold others back.

He says: “There is nothing ordinary about The 10X Rule. It is simply what it says it is: 10 times the thoughts and 10 times the actions of other people. The 10X Rule is about a pure domination mentality. You never do what others do. You must be willing to do what they won’t do – and even take actions that you might deem unreasonable.”

That is it. There is his formula for victory. Simple, yes, but can it be done?

Authors, like others trying to launch a career, build a brand, or grow a business, fail to work longer, try harder, and do more than the competition. In his book he outlines several key areas that people fall short in.

“The following is the basic series of mistakes people make when setting out to achieve goals:

  1. Misstargeting by setting objectives that are too low and don’t allow for enough correct motivation.
  2. Severely underestimating what it will take in terms of actions, resources, money, and energy to accomplish the target.
  3. Spending too much time competing and not enough time dominating their sector.

4.      Underestimating the amount of adversity they will need to overcome in order to actually attain their desired goal.”

So what would a 10X approach for the book world look like?

·         Authors would publish more books.

·         They would invest more into promoting them.

·         They would write book, on under-covered subjects.

·         They would market in unconventional ways.

·         They would work harder, smarter, longer – and not make excuses.

Sounds good to you, right? So how could this actually get done?

Authors will have to:

·         Spend more time executing and less time planning.

·         Get help and hire pros to expand and grow.

·         Overcome fear and venture into what makes them uncomfortable.

·         Build on what works – faster, bigger, more.

·         Attack, create opportunities, follow-up aggressively.

·         Stop thinking of book sales or media opportunities as being limited to only some authors.

·         Believe they can make good things happen – assume control.

·         See themselves as taking action and as not being acted upon.

He rails against “average thoughts and actions.” He says: “Don’t think average, think massive.” In fact, he goes so far as to say: “Average never yields anything more than average and usually much less. Average thinking and actions will only guarantee you misery, uncertainty, and failure. Rid yourself of everything that is average, including the advice you get and friends you keep.”

He wants us to believe bigger, set higher goals, and to do more than we ever thought ourselves capable of doing.

The more action you take, the better your chances are of getting a break,” he writes. “Disciplined, consistent, and persistent actions are more of a determining factor in the creation of success than any other combination of things. Understanding how to calculate and then take the right amount of action is more important than your concept, idea, invention, or business plan.

You need to act persistently, consistently, and immediately. Do what others can’t or refuse to do. Take any action and do it to a level others would never take it to. Size up the competition and their approaches – and then beat them at their own game by playing under a different set of rules.

I liked what he said on time management:

“You have to decide how you are going to use your time. You must command, control, and squeeze every second out of it in order to increase your footprint and dominate the marketplace. Get everyone necessary--your family, colleagues, associates, employees--to recognize and agree upon which properties are most important. If you don’t do this, you will have people with different agendas pulling you in all sorts of directions. My schedule works for me because everyone in my life--from my wife to the people who work with me--knows what is most important to me and understands how I value time. This allows us to handle everything else that comes our way.”

This book, like all other motivational/self-help/get-rich books, offers enough inspiration to go out there and do more, be better, think smarter, and overcome self-appointed boundaries. But it of course, makes you wonder, literally, if you can increase your efforts by tenfold. It doesn’t matter. Try to increase by 10, 50, 100% or more. Then you will be on your way to achieving success as an author – so go for it!

Are Authors Connecting Online The Right Way?

How many social media connections do you have? Are you connected to the right people? Do you engage your connections in a meaningful way? Let’s discuss how authors can use social media to their advantage.

I have 28,460 connections on LinkedIn. That is nothing compared to those with millions of Instagram or Twitter followers, but more than the few hundred connections many authors have on Facebook. Given LinkedIn caps one’s circle of connections at 30,000, I am nearing the ceiling.

Though social media is a numbers game, as people perceive your importance based on your number of followers and connections, the real power is in the engagement.

Get to know your connections and interact with them. If you connect wisely, you are building your brand and launching a business as a writer successfully.

Authors should be doing the following:

·         Reach out to get new people to connect with you – daily.

·         Auto-respond or customize a response to all of those who agree to connect with you.

·         Post regularly on that platform and share often.

·         Respond to comment providers to your posts.

·         Comment on posts of your followers.

·         Read the profile of your connections -- and see the connections of your connection and reach out to them with a comment, question, invite, or offer.

·         Seek to get them to subscribe to your blog, podcast, newsletter.

·         Invite them to your digital events— ie FB chat or zoom webinar, or to view your YouTube channel.

·         Seek to get the email address of each social media connection for your list for future use and to dialogue privately with.

·         Offer something to your connections before asking for something.

I have recently taken to scheduling calls with my new contacts. Some are open to a call and really like the idea that there is real interaction instead of the constant thumbs up emoji response to our posts. The calls have led to real results, cementing relationships that go beyond the digital page.

I know, I know, authors are busy enough than to go nuts everyday with digging up connections to contact, adding connections, interacting with them, and keeping up with the need to post regularly – but it can be worthwhile if done the right way. Determine what a connection is worth to you – and what it will take to obtain, keep and nurture that connection. I will continue to develop new relationships on LinkedIn - -and then work hard to take it to another level, going from digital exchanges to phone calls – and who knows, maybe in-person meetings one day.

Why Every Author Needs A Cheerleader Or Coach

Most writers may seem like loners or quiet people. More than some are definitely social misfits, but even the most gregarious are lonely when it is just them sitting by their keyboard or writing pad. Every writer needs a coach to win at the game of writing, publishing, and promoting books.

Our society has coaches in many forms, to meet many personal, educational, financial, legal, and workplace needs. Just look here. We have:

* Life coaches
* Therapists
* Athletic coaches
* Physical trainers
* Nutritionists
* Psychiatrists
* Workplace consultants
* Wealth managers
* Legal advisors
* Pet trainer
* Professional advisors
* Guidance counselors
* Dating coaches or marriage counselors
* College admissions consultants

Why not a writing coach?

We need editors, publicists, book shepherds, and writing instructors to teach us, motivate us, and at times do things to assist our efforts. Above all else, we need inspirational mentors to go rah-rah and show us a combination of loving support and boot camp toughness.

Before you think you don’t need any help or wouldn’t benefit from the support, ideas, knowledge, or experience of others, think again. You are not a silo, void of society. You may feel isolated, but you don’t exist beyond our universe. We can all be better writers and marketers with the help of trained, experienced, and passionate professionals by our side.

Of course, nothing is worse than a bad experience that ruins it for you. I did not enjoy seeing a marriage counselor before divorcing, nor did I think I got much out of listening to some of my Little League coaches as a kid, but I did find the simple suggestion of a guidance counselor in college from stopping me from quitting college. See, you just need the right person to come along at the right time. But you must be open to the advice and acknowledge you need help or recognize that someone else can bring out the greatness within you.

Writing and marketing seem like go-it-alone ventures, and often they are, but think of how much you would learn, grow, and do as a result of getting help from a pro.

Keep an open mind to working with others to make you the best writer that you can be, to position you for publishing success, and to help you market your brand and sell more books. You have nothing to lose — and everything to gain.
