How Authors Can Increase Their Web Traffic

How can authors increase traffic to their web site?

Before that can be answered, authors must first address this question? Why do I want more clicks to my site?

Let’s explore why most authors might want more web traffic:

·         To sell as current or upcoming book

·         To sell backlisted titles

·         To sell another product or service such as a course

·         To charge for others to advertise on the site

·         To build a brand that people would pay to speak

·         To serve the ego and bragging rights

·         To get the attention of a literary agent or publisher

·         To share a message with as many people as possible

·         To raise funds

·         To help a cause

·         To give away a loss-leader freebie

Identifying some or all of the above reasons for why more traffic is desired will help authors to determine a methodology for getting more traffic to the site. For instance, to get a specific book sold, one must seek out potential book buyers of your genre. You won’t look for clicks by tweeting to sports-related tweeters if your book is about turtles, right? Any you won’t advertise your book on marriage to porn sites. Know your readership.

Targeting one’s efforts will make the difference between success and failure.

So what can increase web site traffic?

·         Affiliate sales

·         Advertisements

·         Boosted posts

·         Social media posts such as on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Linked In

·         Traditional media coverage

·         Speaking appearances

·         Awards won

·         Offers of something free

·         Asking your network for referrals to your site

·         Blogging/podcastng.video posting

·         Buying mail lists

·         Employing paid search services

·         SEO-proofing your site

·         Revising your site to remain accurate and relevant

You need to set goals. Start by measuring current traffic levels and then set daily, weekly, and monthly benchmarks to be achieved. What gets measured gets improved.

You then need to make a concerted effort to supersize your web site traffic. Observe which activities create the most traffic and start to focus on them and eliminate less productive avenues.

Be prepared to experiment – and to stick with it for a period of time. Don’t overly judge one day’s or one week’s worth of activities and traffic. Stay focused and persistent – and you will grow your web site traffic. Hopefully that growth yields the goals you are seeking to achieve.

12 Steps To Author Success

Authors, like everyone else, wants to live their dreams, fulfill their potential, make money, leave a legacy, and change the world through their work. Talent, luck, resources, and a strong work ethic may deliver results to authors. So how can an author work better at succeeding?

1.      Focus on one task at a time. Put your brain, body, and energy into the very thing you are doing. Don’t think about anything else. Be in the zone.

2.      Know why you are doing what you are doing. Purpose will help inspire action and you will go the extra mile.

3.      Be more efficient at what you’re doing. Look for ways to improve 10%, 20%, or even 50%.

4.      Hire others to help you. Act like a manager – of yourself and others. You can succeed all on your won but it is tough to do so. It takes a team to win.

5.      Set goals, measure output, and review ways to improve.

6.      Learn to listen more than you talk. You will learn something and people will like you for paying attention to them.

7.      Accept the inevitability of change, technology, advances, and increased competition.

8.      Don’t accept failure. Never give up. Change tactics, try harder, act smarter. But do not let challenges, losses, or the unknown undermine you.

9.      Ignore your shortcoming; just grow your strengths.

10.  Don’t let ego get in your way. Find the easiest, quickest, and least resisted path to find success. But, where needed, be prepared to work harder and longer than anyone. No one owes you anything. You manifest your world.

11.  Remain calm, smile, and grounded. Find confidence in your abilities and believe in your message and purpose.

12.  Lastly, don’t procrastinate. Confront what troubles you most. Everything after that seems simple.

Go Promote Other Books to Promote Yours

Authors could be a lot more successful if they helped their competition.

You read that right. Bu helping another author you can help yourself. It doesn’t matter if they sell more books as a result. You will sell more books and enhance your brand in the process.

It may seem counter-intuitive to provide resources to those who seek to sell their book while you seek the very same customer, but the reality is that the world is big enough to buy their book and yours.

Here are some things you can do with another author:

*Interview each other for your respective blogs
*Post info on each other’s books on social media
*Provide some free resource on your site from that other author in exchange for them doing the same
*Share connections, information, ideas, or opportunities
*Do joint public appearances
*Collaborate on an advertising campaign

Why would you do this?

Because it is:

*Free
*Easy to do
*Not time-consuming
*Going to have a nice risk-free pay-off

It doesn’t matter if the other author sells 200 books as a result of your efforts, only that you sold x amount of books because of their assistance that otherwise may not have happened.

So who should you strive to connect with? Other authors, silly! Embrace your competitors as allies. Join online writers groups, attend writers conferences, participate in author seminars, and sign up for professional industry writer organizations that serve your genre thrillers, for instance, location or region, publishing type (self-publish, for instance), or demographic (i.e. based on gender, race, religion).

It may seem like blasphemy to talk to the enemy but authors are really not your opposition. They can relate to what you do and want — and you can both succeed without trampling the other.

If you feel more comfortable, collaborate with authors outside of your genre. Let’s pair a mystery writer with a children’s book author or a business author with a health writer. Now you won’t feel like direct competitors and can complement each other by introducing different connections and approaches to one another.

So, aside from hiring a publicist, tweeting, speaking, sending out press releases, paying for reviews, buying ads, applying for awards, and learning how to market a book and brand, befriend some authors. They will be helpful and supportive. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

How Authors Become Good Salespeople

For authors to sell books they must transition to the mindset of salesperson. They may be a writer inside, but they have to think and act like a salesperson when looking to sell books. A writer may see himself or herself as a creative, helpful, and insightful talent. That’s fine. But to see the cash register ring, one must now wear the mental armor of a salesperson.

The salesperson is a hunter. He or she looks to capture customers. That is it. The salesperson serves one purpose, one function: to make a sale. The whole objective of this game is to get others to say yes to buying your book. Each sale does not validate the greatness of your book, only the greatness of your sales pitch.

To sell effectively, you will need to:

·         Create a pipeline with direct outreach and follow-up to potential customers.

·         Expand your network and referral base.

·         Promote via traditional and social media.

·         Publicly speak and participate in events.

·         Explore advertising.

·         Locate lists of groups, businesses, non-profits, and government agencies to sell in bulk to.

·         Piece together or mailing list to send emails to.

·         Make your website a selling machine.

·         Improve your presentation skills and appearance.

·         Ignore the “no” to get to those who will say “yes.”

To sell books, you don’t have to be slick or a fast-talker. But you do need to present your offering in the best possible light and to not merely describe the functions or attributes of your book but rather to offer its benefits and show how it will help others fulfill their needs or desires.

Selling is really about treating people fairly, with respect, enthusiasm, honesty, and in a friendly manner. You are connecting with someone and developing a relationship. This means you listen, you support them, and you ask questions to show engagement and concern.

Determine why people should want your book. Then, feed them what they want to hear. Develop your selling persona. Do you tell jokes, share statistics, or make strong claims? Do you offer reviews, testimonials, and awards to back your assertions up? Do you get emotional or intellectual or aggressive? Find your style and look to sell others in a customized manner.

Words fill your book and it will be words that will sell it, too.  Choose your words wisely and watch them convince others to invest in your book – and themselves.
