Can Books Answer America’s Biggest Threat?

A CBS News poll in mid-January showed that the majority of Americans cite fellow Americans as the biggest threat to our nation. Can books change this?

First, look at what Americans see as a huge danger to America:

·         Military threats and other nations were feared only by 8 %.

·         Natural disasters/weather/or viruses were feared by 17%.

·         Economic forces posed a threat to 20%.

·         Domestic enemies and fellow Americans were feared by 54%.

We need books that help us heal, address issues, resolve problems, establish a positive dialogue, and lead us away from letting our darkest fears rule us.

Whether they be fantasy or non-fiction, books must show us that America is stronger than any threat to it, even when our biggest challenge is how to get along with one another.

So terrorists, diseases, storms, and economies, as devastating as any of them could be, pale in comparison to the threat from within our nation, in the minds of Americans.

Racial intolerance and inequality.

Gender wars.

Political disagreements.

Religious conflicts.

America is united in being disunited. We bleed red or blue now. We listen to either CNN or Fox. We agree on little, from facts to values, whether about our health, economy, or social views.

Books, if they are to unite us with information, or imagination, need to step things up. Now.
