Visit Your Library & Become Its Advocate, Now!

February 3, 2018 is Take Your Child to the Library Day.  The first such day was celebrated in 2011.  But you don’t need a special day to appreciate what a library can offer a community and its readers.

There are many ways to celebrate our precious libraries.  Here are 8 things you can do:

·         Donate books to your local library.  Even better, drive a few towns over to a poorer neighborhood and donate your books there.  Consider donating money too.

·         Volunteer to help out at your library.

·         Make use of a library’s resources, whether in print, online, or with its collection of audio and video materials.

·         Bring your kids to the library and show them what they can do there and how it’s a safe haven to join a book–loving community.

·         Attend events and author appearances at the library.

·         Choose the library as a destination to read a book, do homework, or to look things up through its proprietary databases.

·         Talk to the librarian and pick his or her brain. Librarians retain a wealth of knowledge who can reduce time wasted on searches to nowhere.

·         Browse the shelves and randomly discover a book.  Flip through photography books, skim books on subjects you rarely expose yourself to, and thumb through some escapist fiction that may just hook you.  Be an intellectual pioneer.  Go on a wild adventure right in your neighborhood library.

If you want to introduce the library to a young child, consider reading picture books with a library theme, including these:

Lulu Loves the Library
Carlo and the Really Nice Librarian
A Library Book for Bear
Shelf Elf’s Guide to Library Etiquette
Jumping Off Library Shelves
How the Library (Not the Prince) Saved Repunzel

To learn more about how to celebrate and honor libraries, consult www.ala.org.  The American Library Association sponsors National Library Week April 8-14, 2018.

Misty Copeland, a celebrated star of the ballet and the author of a New York Times best-selling memoir, will serve as the honorary choice of National Library Week.

Among the things focused on during that pro-library week is National Library Workers Day, National Bookmobile Day, and Take Action for Libraries Day, The ALA store sells posters and bookmarks that highlight how librarians have been trailblazers on issues such as intellectual freedom, equity of access to books, and free speech.

Lastly, check out www.ilovelibraries.org to learn about things like recommended reading lists, how to start a book club, and how authors can get involved in supporting their libraries.  You’ll learn about key issues confronting libraries, from funding to marketing, and you’ll see how you can become a library trustee or a strong library advocate.
