Interview With Equal Right Author Marie W. Watts

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book?  I have always dreamed about writing novels. Therefore, I turned my experiences as an employment discrimination investigator into fiction. Diversity is my passion, so the match was ideal.

2. What is it about and who is it for? Only a Pawn: Warriors for Equal Rights is the second book in the trilogy, Warriors for Equal Rights.  It follows the lives of federal employment discrimination investigators who work to halt all types of employment discrimination, including sexual harassment. You are embroiled in their cases as well as the twists and turns of their personal lives. This is a novel designed for adults.

3. What takeaways might the reader will be left with after reading it?  Readers should come away with a different perspective on diversity and understand that we all have biases and prejudices. The cast is varied—people of color, LGBTQ, and the disabled. Each is flawed.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?  I picked titles related to the content and then looked for similar titles on Amazon. I gave my graphic artist some ideas for the cover, and she took over from there.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers?

1. Read voraciously.

2. Continue taking classes, watching videos, or reading books on the craft.

3. Find a support group composed of writers. Women’s Fiction Writers Association has filled a void for me in this area, particularly during COVID.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?  From listening to my peer’s experiences, I believe that small, independent presses and self-publishing are in the cards. I’ve read several of their books that agents rejected.  The novels are exceptional. The authors were forced to choose alternative publishing routes.

7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book?  First off, finding the time to write since I was still working. Staying motivated and having confidence in my writing is something I struggle with.

8. How would you describe your writing style?  Easy to read and short on long, flowery descriptions.

9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

If you enjoy a book where the characters figure out “who done it” this book is for you.

Your eyes will be open to a completely different type of investigation; not murder, but discrimination.
