1.
What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea
or experience and turning it into this book?
Everyone (myself included) has, at one time or
another, a horrible year or even a devastating decade that totally crushes the
life of of them and (If at that LOW point) someone came up to them and said,
“Leave with me right now and I could take you somewhere far away where you
could live the life of your dreams and you would FINALLY be happy”…Wouldn’t you
consider it? I think ½ the people in the world WOULD consider it. I would! I
set out to make a Reality TV show that offers that. Life of your dreams...but
with a catch.
Then a producer friend said “Get Up and GO!” sounded
like a great movie idea. So, I wrote a screenplay AND the book.
2. What is it about and who is it for?
This follows the lives of 4 “fictional” characters
that said YES to the offer. We follow their lives, their stories to see how
they do in their new fantasy lives. Is it all and more than they expect? Do
they fail? Do they miss their old lives and go back? Are they now happy for the
first time in their lives? I think the age group would be the 40 and over
crowd. They have the life experiences to appreciate such an offer. Or just
people that suffered one defeat after another no matter how hard they worked or
how hard they tried. Just one string of “million to 1” bouts of impossibly bad luck
that held them back.
That is the audience (and contestants) I seek.
3. What takeaways might the reader will be
left with after reading it?
Although the book is a “fictional” account of the Get
Up and Go TV show, it does let the reader see how some “contestants” deal with
their new “Fantasy” lives. Some do find the happiness they never had, Some
don’t. We see what they have to deal with to keep their new identities a
secret, the stress of avoiding being discovered. And resisting the temptation
to contact their old friends and family. And trying to actually succeed in
their NEW jobs that they “thought” they could handle.
Food for thought and a glimpse into “what could be”.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title
and cover design?
The title came
up in a conversation with my tax agent about 10 years ago.
She was having a miserable year and stated all the
things that have been holding her back in life over the years. About leaving
EVERYONE and just jumping in a car and driving away somewhere. I said I would
join her! I said it sounded like a great idea. To just Get Up and Go.
The cover art is an interesting story, I hired an
artist that lived on one of the Hawaiian Islands. I gave him a few ideas and he
sent me his first draft. Before he could make changes, there was a Volcano that
erupted near his home and was told to evacuate. I never heard from him again.
So I left the art as is.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you
have for fellow writers?
This is my FIRST book. So technically, I am NO expert
to give advice. But as a “dreamer”, I can only say… Just do it. Don’t just
“talk” about writing a story. Just get your ass off of the couch, shut off the
phone, and just start typing. Your story WILL come.
6. What trends in the book world do you see
-- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?
There are TOO many books out in the world. Mine is
just another. And NOW A machine can write a War and Peace size novel in 1
minute. So the only thing I see as an “opening” are stories about REAL life
experiences or totally original concepts. I am hoping that my book's subject
matter is so different (and ties into reality) that it will appeal to readers
that are “bored” with the same plots and story-lines that many other books
offer. Machines might take a little while to catch up to this one!
7. What challenges did you overcome to write
this book?
I actually wrote the screenplay first. (And I never
wrote a screenplay before either) So I hired a consultant to guide me. At
first, he adjusted things I wrote to flow better and be more book-like. But, by
maybe the fourth chapter, he was only basically checking grammar and so forth.
I also had a LOT of material to draw on because my original screenplay was WAY
too long (would have been 3 hours). So, all the things I cut from the
screenplay, I reintroduced into the book version.
8. How would you describe your writing
style?
I am dialog
heavy and less on LONG, flowery descriptions of the scenes. I “hear” the
characters in my head. Their mannerisms, their inflections, their tone. So, my
writing reflects that in their words. The reader will too.
9. If people can buy or read one book this
week or month, why should it be yours?
It’s a FUN, quick read with MANY different elements
and story-lines. There are almost NO books with a similar story-line and plot.
Everyone will have a FAVORITE part and something that they would change. That
is a good thing. There are twists that came out of left field. And a host of
characters that readers will find, at least one, that they can say...That’s ME!
