1. What
motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or
experience and turning it into this book? I've
been an advocate for financial literacy for many years. A couple of years ago I
was speaking with a
friend about the fact that today’s youth doesn’t have a basic understanding of
basic financial terms and we had
an 'ah ha' moment, realizing that the biggest gap in financial education is and
begins with high school students. The challenge was ' how do you take a boring
subject matter and make it compelling to teens?' and do it in a way that isn't
simply taking the same words and message and putting it in a different order -
after all, there are other books on financial literacy. I came up with the idea
of a graphic novel based on real stories with real characters.
2. What is it about and who is it for? It's an educational tool with an online teaching
guide and additional reference materials. The primary audience is teenagers and
young adults, but interestingly it has been very well received by tweens and
adults in their 30's.
3. What takeaways might the reader will be
left with after reading it? I hope
that the biggest lesson the reader is that saving and investing take time and
patience, and that those two things (time and patience) are your biggest ally
in this. You'll make mistakes, and will even repeat some, and that's okay -
time and patience using the right strategy can fix almost any financial
mistake.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title
and cover design? The idea came to us
pretty early. I had seen an ad for a money tree
and then
spoke with my illustrator Brian
and I said, 'that's it' Money Can Grow on Trees - he sketched up a couple of
designs and that was it.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have
for fellow writers? I'm not a
professional writer but will say that being able to connect with your audience
by being authentic and yourself is very important. Find something to write
about that you want to share and feel is important.
6. What trends in the book world do you see
-- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? A little outside my scope of expertise, but I do
believe that graphic novels and more interactive ways of communicating are
being well received and provide an opportunity to reach the audience
effectively and in interesting new ways.
7. What challenges did you overcome to write
this book? Several of
the chapters deal with dry and sometimes complicated material - after all,
what's fun about budget spreadsheets or compounding interest... Taking that
subject matter and keeping it light and fun was a challenge at times. Having
real life experiences and real characters to tell the story helped a great
deal.
8. How would you describe your writing style? First voice / narrative. I hope none of the book
comes off as preachy, rather more meant to be 'I've been in your shoes, and it
will be okay'.
9. If people can buy or read one book this
week or month, why should it be yours? I
firmly believe financial literacy is incredibly important and should be thought
early and often. I think this book does so in an innovative and fun way - I'm
not aware of any other graphic novel that deals with this subject. As a
financial advisor I would have to say, I'm not concerned with where and how you
learn these important life skills, as long as you learn them. My personal hope
is that someone reads this book and says, I can do this (writing a book on
financial literary) better and does it.
