Are your New Year's resolutions already busted or looking like a pipe dream?
Sober up and get back out there.
- What
are your goals and priorities?
- How
will you reach them?
- What
drives your writing?
You probably have asked yourself these questions and likely fell short in answering them
Without identifying specific goals to achieve, you won't succeed
Here is my not-so-secret sauce to achieving:
- Create
your vision and mission statement - say what you want to achieve and why -
then find the how
- ID
the key areas that you want or need to improve
- Prioritize
the order on that list
- See
who or what can assist you
- Make
a plan to act, taking incremental steps in a timeline that allows for
paced growth
- Don't
give up after a delay or setback
- Balance your commitment to writing with work-fun-rest-chores-activism-charity-travel-family/friends-reading-time to think
The world of resolutions is littered with good intentions. Then life's reality hits and we fall back into complicated lives of waste, denial, laziness, bad habits, destructive thinking, negative people, and insecure feelings. We must do something to break the cycle that imprisons our way of life. What will you do to change?
All of those axioms we used to hear as skid are true. Remember, Where there is a will, there's a way.
As a writer, you are more thinker than do-er. You feel a lot. You dream. You analyze. You wordplay and role-play while seeking a payday. However, you need to supplement living in your head with real-world action. I am not saying you have to grow up or alter your driving essence, but you do need to step out of the sandbox at times and re-evaluate how you go about doing what is needed to take you from here to there, wherever that is.
Write
down your mission. State your vision. Then craft a blueprint to mobilize you to
make your hopes come true. You will fail many times in many areas in many ways.
That is ok. Keep trying and each failure will bring you closer to success.
First American Novel Debuts 234 Years
Ago
“On January 21, 1789, Boston publisher Isaiah Thomas and
Company published what is generally considered to be the first American novel:
24-year-old William Hill Brown’s The Power of Sympathy: or, The Triumph
of Nature, which sold (albeit badly) for the price of 9
shillings.
“It is the classic story of boy meets girl, boy falls for
girl, boy and girl find out they’re siblings on their wedding day, girl
promptly dies of consumption, boy eventually shoots himself while clutching a
copy of The Sorrows of Young Werther to his breast. You know
the tale.”
