Would you rather pursue your dreams, giving you a chance to
succeed, despite the odds, or would you prefer to be safely on the sidelines,
risk-free, but complaint-filled and excuse-heavy?
To me it is not a choice of equal weight. Get
the hell out there, guns blazing, and fight for your dream. Learn from my
deceased brother-in-law, Steve.
Even if you feel mentally exhausted and not
physically up to the task, you must go out there and reach beyond your means to
pursue your wildest dreams.
My brother-in-law, 63, passed away this past month.
He was a dreamer in the truest sense. Not an author, but a real estate broker,
he always chased down commercial properties hoping to make a big splash. He
never quite had the all-star run he thought himself capable of pulling off, but
he lived for the deal, always a chance to score the big one.
He did get deals done over time, and some were
impressive. But he wanted more, and that hunger drove him to keep pushing. He
knew no one can win from the sidelines. Well, authors, take note.
Pursue your dreams, no matter how challenging,
exhausting, costly, or frustrating the pursuit can be. I don’t want to hear you
whine, make excuses, or pursue half-assed attempts to market your book. It is
simple: either you believe in your book or you don’t. If you believe, act like
it, and take matters into your own hands.
To not pursue your dreams is to commit a crime
against yourself — if your book is worthy. If your book is mediocre and you
conclude it is a loser or you no longer believe in yourself, then yes, pack it in
immediately. Why waste time, energy, funds, or mindshare on a clunker — and why
try to sell a book to someone who will find it to be lousy?
Steve never stopped believing that a big deal
was around the corner. But as long as the dream was alive, he kept going and
did all that he could to convert his hopes into a reality. Falling short is not
a failure; not trying when you still have a dream is.
