1. What
inspired you to write this book?
I am
passionate about improving the lives of children around the world, especially
in developing countries. I currently work in the area of climate change and
decided to combine both areas i.e. helping children became aware of the
importance of preserving the environment and the effects of climate.
2.
What exactly is it about and who is it written for?
My debut book,
“Bibi Saves the Honey Bees”, is the first book in a 3-part series. It is
about how Bibi, goes on an adventure to save the honey bees while navigating
through a maze of obstacles that Mother Nature throws in her way, Will she
succeed? The book is written for children aged 5 to 8 years old.
3. What
do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?
I hope readers
will also learn about determination, persistence and never giving up. The
practical activity at end of the book will also help readers take action, in
some small way, to preserve the environment.
4. How
did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?
The book’s
title is a combination of the main character’s name and what she sets out to do
in the book. The cover design came from one of the illustrations in the book
that summed up the story very well.
5. What
advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than
run!?
Stay the
course! This is not a sprint … yes, there will bumps, twists and wrong turns
along the way, but believe in your vision, stay focused and you will cross the
finish line.
6. What
trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book
publishing industry is heading?
One of the
trends I see is the explosion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the book
world. With regard to the book publishing industry, in my niche of children’s
books, I think that the publishing industry is moving away from the traditional
way of telling a story towards a more interactive experience. This will
encourage and enable the reader to be more involved with the story, such as,
choosing your own ending or your own adventure and possibly interactive
illustrations.
7. Were
there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when
writing this book?
In writing
this book, my experiences came from my career. I have worked over 20 years in the
field of humanitarian assistance and sustainable development focussing on the
welfare of children and mothers in the developing world. I currently work as a
finance professional in the area of climate change.
8. How
would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing
similar to?
My
writing style could be described as Narrative Writing (fiction). This type of
style is well suited to writing for children. Books similar to my writing style
include, Shabazz Larkin’s The Thing About Bees, Bethany
Barton’s Give Bees a Chance.
9. What
challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book?
My first
challenge was getting my story from just an idea in my head to finally putting
it on paper. Procrastination was the second challenge I overcame which lead me
to just write, review and revise every chance I got till I finished my
manuscript.
10. If
people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?
It
should be my book, “Bibi Saves the Honey Bees” because it tackles a
topic that is very relevant today. Honey bees play a vital role in the food
chain. They not only provide honey but they are also pollinators. Pollinators help
in the production of crops as well as flowers and plants. Without these
pollinators the world’s food supply could be reduced drastically which would
ultimately affect the world’s population. The simple solution of planting
bee-friendly flowers is a very easy one for anyone to do, be it in a garden or flowerpot.
The instructions on how to compost also goes a long way to preserving the
environment. My book provides a two-pronged approach to saving the honey bees.
