With the holiday season upon us, you will no doubt be inundated with solicitations to give to many causes and organizations, from helping military veterans and feeding the homeless, to eradicating a disease or saving the environment. But what I hope you leave room in your heart and wallet for are books.
Yes, buy books as presents or for yourself, but also support book-centric causes, such as fighting book bans, helping people to become readers, and keeping libraries open.
The many ways to support book-related charities and non-profits, such as literacy groups, free speech advocates, and libraries, include the following:
* Donate books
* Volunteer your time
* Give money to an organization
* Provide other goods or services
* Lobby others to give/participate
* Share useful ideas with them
* Learn about the issues, trends, needs, and challenges
these organizations face
* Show your support privately and publicly
* Protest, shun, or lobby against enemies of your cause
* Vote and campaign for elected officials who support the entity or cause
Don’t know where to go to help? Start locally, then expand to your state, the rest of the country, and even the world. Here are some nationwide organizations worthy of your dollars. Contact them to see how you can participate locally and help nationally:
Literacy
* Book Aid International
* World Literacy Foundation
* Reading Is Fundamental
* Literacy For Incarcerated Teens
* Reading Partners
* First Book
* Room To Read
Free Speech
* Free Expression Network (PEN)
* National Coalition Against Censorship
* Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression
* ACLU
Libraries
* American Library Association
* Public Library Association
* Little Free Library
* Association of Bookmobile & Outreach Services
* International Federation of Libraries and Institutions
Honor the spirit of giving and join the mission to educate, inform, inspire, and enlighten the world through the truth, imagination, instruction, and hope of books.
Happy Holidays!
