Interview With Children's Book Author Aurelia L. Spencer

1. What inspired you to write this book? Although I was an adult when my grandmother passed, I remember walking into her house.  I looked into her bedroom as if, somehow, she would miraculously be there.  I then began to think about how confusing that type of situation must be for a child.  The book was written to help children who are experiencing the loss of a loved one to realize that their loved one is always with them.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for?  The book is about a little girl who spends her time with her grandma Nanna baking, planting flowers, and doing their hair.  It also shows the safety and security the little girl finds in her grandma's arms.  When the little girl discovers that her grandma is getting sick and then is no longer there, she cries with her mother, wondering where Nanna went and questioning how she can continue on.  The books then shows how the little girl realizes that when she does all the things that she did with her grandma, her grandma Nanna is there with her.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?  I hope readers will find comfort in reading my book, coming to the understanding that our loved ones are always with us.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?  I decided on the title and cover of the book because it captures the haunting question a child may ask when a loved one passes away.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?  Do it! If you have a story to tell, tell it.  If you have overcome hurdles in life, write about it!  It will definitely help someone.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? What I have seen is that it can be challenging to market a self-published book.  I think that the publishing industry is heading towards publishing companies that help authors to self-publish.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?  The experience of going on in life after my grandmother passed away and coming to the realization that she will always be with me.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to?  The book is written in a poetic format.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book?  The biggest challenge I overcame with writing this book was believing in it enough to start the process of finding a publisher.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? My book is for everyone, not just children.  We all have an inner-child that needs to be nurtured.  This book will take you back to a painful time and will encourage you to begin the healing process by coming to the understanding that death is a part of life.  It will help you to see the many ways that our loved ones who have passed away are still with us.
