Interview With Children’s Author D. S. Harvey

1. What inspired you to write this book?
Pure inspiration. I awoke one morning and my head was full of Monty the Menor. Monty was written in one hour.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for?
Monty is perfect for 3-7 year olds. Monty is a Menor a junior Wensum. A Menor is a trainee magician. Monty doesn’t read his spell book and his first spell goes horribly wrong. His magician’s hat is a helicopter and Monty turns many colors according to his mood, as do the genie Horum and Cassum the cat. Monty’s enemy is the evil, smelly witch Crazy Crew.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?
Fun and laughter. Monty also teaches children about colors and apart from being fun, is quite morally educational.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?
Again, the title was inspiration and it was obvious Monty had to be shown flying.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?
Write what you have a passion for and don’t give up.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?
I would like to see more fun and laughter. More entertainment.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?
No.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to?
My writing is inspirational. I couldn’t compare myself to any other writer. I do not read other children’s authors.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book?
 None.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?
If you want to see your child enjoying a book, laughing while they read - then it has to be Monty the Menor’s Magic.
