Interview With Debut Author Dr. Adam Palladino

1. What inspired you to write this book?

My inspiration behind writing this story was to write a fun, humorous, and pill-filled book that teaches children that they can overcome any obstacle in their life. This book was written for a creative writing assignment when I was a junior in high school .

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for?

Looking for a fun book to read to your children? This humorous story uses puns to teach children that they can overcome obstacles in their life. On January 13, 1998, the small town of GuacamoleVille was faced with a scary situation. Squishy Squash finds himself stuck in a spicy Dorito rainstorm. Not sure what to do, he decides to call the Sour Stringbean show for advice.  Squishy needs a bit of luck to overcome this scary situation... and a bit of help.  But can Squishy find the help he needs to make it out of this Dorito rainstorm? This book is for elementary school students but it can be used as a great teaching tool for all grades.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?

The primary goal that I would like for my readers to get from this book is that in life we experience obstacles and hardships, but with the support of our friends, family, and teachers, we can overcome anything.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design?

I brainstormed a few book titles for this book, but I arrived at Terror in GuacamoleVille because it is catchy and perfectly depicts what the story is about. I chose to develop the cover this way because it grasps the concept of the book, the three characters running away from the Dorito rainstorm. It is inviting, cute, friendly, and funny.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!?

Writing a book is a process and sometimes your ideas may not come immediately; however, with perseverance and drive, you can write and publish your own book. Once you publish your book - either self-published or through a traditional publisher - you will have your literature out there, so you will need to market your promote your work on social media and scheduling signing events.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

I think the trends are constantly evolving, so it is difficult to say. I think the publishing industry is heading more into self-publishing as it is more cost effective, you maintain 100% of your rights, and you can set your own prices. I believe a writer can be successful with either a traditional publisher or self-publishing.

7. Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?

The main experiences that helped me write this book was to reflect upon my personal hardships - bullying - and how I overcame them. Although this was a difficult obstacle throughout my life, I was adamant about overcoming this obstacle and to prove to those bullies that I am stronger than they were. Additionally, as I love food, humor, and puns, I wanted to integrate all of those concepts into my book and use them in my classroom.

8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to?

My writing style is creative writing, humor, and narratives. I think my book is unique in the way that it implements a variety of different ideas to capture the essence of my thought process. I am not too sure who my book is similar to, but I can confidently say that Dr. Seuss was a huge influence in my writing, Diary of a Wimpy Kid gave me many ideas, and Grumpy Monkey.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book?

The biggest challenge that I faced was putting it on the backburner for so long. When I wrote this in high school, I never believed that it would become published; however, my wife and family encouraged me to copyright it and get it published. I needed that extra push from my wife and family to make my dream come true.

10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

My book is the best book to read! It is filled with all sorts of fun, funny, and humorous moments that will make you laugh and enjoy the story. It also has a wonderful message that will help you learn and grow as a person. The characters are engaging and relatable and the story is full of exciting adventures that will keep you entertained. It is a great book to read when you need some lighthearted entertainment. The message of the book is also important and will help you to think about life in different ways. So if you want a unique and enjoyable reading experience, then my book is the one to read!
