Interview With Indie Author Madison Schrader

1. What inspired you to write this book? My kids. As an anxiety sufferer, it’s always been very important to me to allow my kids time to wind down before bed and I think that’s where our mutual love of reading was born. One night they asked me to create a story rather than read one and that was the beginning of the enchanted tale that is finding her sprinkles.

2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? Finding Her Sprinkles is aimed at a young children’s audience however it does have a more complex undertone if it was explored by an older child. It’s about a fairy who loses her sprinkles from her wand. She’s given a series of trials and she learns that love always leads the way and belief in yourself is needed to never give up and to overcome obstacles. Diving deeper, the sprinkles are her identity. She loses herself and along the way, the people she meets and the things she faces helps her to find herself again.

3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? The sprinkles are all different colors to represent the different parts of our unique personalities. Some parts are nicer than others (some colors are prettier) but they are all necessary. You are brave. You are strong. You are perfect just the way you are.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? I wanted it to be engaging and fun! I wanted it to scream joy and be fearless so color was the focus

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than run!? I submitted my very first manuscript back in 2020, a children’s illustrated book. On the 16th of December 2022, it became officially available to purchase.  I have wanted to be a writer,I’m going to say most of my life. But I viewed authors as a different breed. That they weren’t like me. That not just anyone could be one.  I’m about to drop a major truth bomb, one that only a couple of people actually know and I feel sick even writing this because it brings up so much from my past but here goes… I failed VCE. And I don’t think I’ve been able to lay that to rest until this very moment. The choices of your past, your age, a ridiculous number or any other limiting belief you’re living with, DOES NOT HAVE TO HINDER YOUR FUTURE. The path may not be as linear of a journey as some may receive but it doesn’t mean it can’t still be yours. So this is for you, my younger stupid self who didn’t spend her time at high school wisely (but she sure did have a hell of a lot of fun), I feel like Elle Woods in legally blonde but I’m gonna say it - I DID IT! And for anyone who’s living with a dream they don’t believe they can achieve… Dreams really do come true. Don’t give up.

6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?  It pains me to say that one day paper and hard back covers I believe will become extinct. There’s nothing quite like the smell of a book store, the sound of a fresh spine opening or the feel of the pages you turn. I hope it won’t be the case but everything is moving more and more digital.

7. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? I try to write as if I’m speaking the words out loud. It can be blunt. It’s often raw and it’s always emotional.

8. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? I think removing the labels and limiting self-beliefs that we pick up along our journey and realizing that anything is possible but you need to try. You need to give it a go. You need to accept that failure and rejection will come hand in hand with success but without the negative we cannot recognize the positive 10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? Because it is a very open ended read and can spark quite deep interpretations and discussions between children and parents/care givers  Yes absolutely. I’d love to arrange a phone call to discuss that further. I am available tomorrow or Friday anytime (Melbourne time)
