Your Book Marketing Stinks: Here’s A Fix

Your book marketing stinks.

Am I wrong?

How do I know this?

Because I play the odds.

Most authors barely attempt to market their books — and most attempts are weak and fail to deliver.

Writers often do not want to promote, don’t know how to, and lack the time or funds to do it well. You will feel guilty over your book marketing shortfall, adding insult to injury.

You alternate between thinking about it and doing it, never fully committed to it even when you are doing some marketing:

Human nature kicks in. Am I wrong?

Marketing for authors fails for the same reason that half the marriages end in divorce, the majority of our nation is fat, and that most people live paycheck to paycheck. Things go sour often due to many factors, including — but not limited to — a lack of initiative, skills, knowledge, time, and willpower.

It is how we live life — failure, loss, and challenge in the key areas of our life are often present.

You may want to improve your book marketing. Does it stink for a reason? Could it be that:

* You lack a good effort?
* You do not market frequently?
* Your marketing lacks quality?
* You had bad luck? Bad timing?
* You don’t have realistic goals?
* You need help but don’t pursue it?
* You don’t know how to market well?

The key to change, is to in fact change.

Progress starts first by admitting you need help and that your book marketing sucks. Then figure out exactly where you fall short, identify why, and plan on what you will do to change and improve things.

Look, your book marketing stinks. Fix that shit.

Do You Give Readers An Orgasm?

What do people really want?

An orgasm.

From sex, food, and entertainment, the gremlin in us wants to release a flood of positivity, where our bodies uncontrollably twitch and vibrate from the orgasmic chemicals, body parts, and content that we are always open to consuming.

How do you move someone from curiosity to commitment, where they decide to give your book a chance and purchase it?

Promise an orgasm.

People buy your book based on a promise. They are lured by the genre, the title, the cover, the author, and the back cover copy. Maybe a review wins them over. They are not buying it because they know it will be very good; they buy on hope and optimism, on your promise that they will enjoy it.

So, how do you win potential readers over to get them to try your book?

Be ready to answer these questions without being asked:

·         Do you solve a problem, fill a need, quench a desire?

·         What is your elevator speech?

·         What is your one-sentence tagline?

·         Do you tap into the reader’s emotional state? Are you providing lots of relevant and useful information?

·         Do you offer an escape from life?

You must present your offering as a way for one to achieve a reading orgasm.

Your book’s promotion must be one or more of these things:

·         Cute and clever

·         Humorous

·         Alerting us to a danger

·         Empowering

·         Sexy

·         Appeal to our morals

·         Offer red meat to our tribal perspective

·         Commit to providing value

·         Overcome unstated objections

·         Solve problems, reducing risks, mitigating damages

·         Add value

·         Move from pain or towards pleasure

·         Give them hope, curiosity, desire

·         Connect with them so they like and trust you

Answer these questions:

·         Who does your reader want to become?

·         Who are they now?

·         What are they not getting that you offer?

Cast a vision for their life that includes your book.

You need to win a reader’s trust by

·         Stating agreeable beliefs

·         Being logical and stating common sense

·         Speaking their language

·         Showing you understand their space

·         Dropping reference points: accomplishments, titles, experiences, years of work

·         Being relatable as a person

·         Sounding passionate, smart, and pleasant

·         Sounding authentic

·         Providing testimonials, reviews, references, or media clips: third-party validation

Finally, you can help deliver a reading orgasm based on:

·         Your book’s subject and quality

·         Your life’s experiences and personality and qualifications

·         Your visuals: book cover, your looks, your site, your branded content like a biz card or flier or sign

·         Connecting to current times in news and trends

·         Appealing to the human condition

Give your reader an orgasm!
