What
type of books do you write? My current book is Science Fiction/Adventure, but I also write Fantasy, Historical Fiction
and Romance. I also write a little
poetry.
What
is your newest book about? The Assassin Journals: Hunter is about one man's
quest for revenge and personal redemption. Gage Brassan is an ex-soldier turned
assassin who undergoes a series of personal trials that serve as a catalyst
reminding him of his military past and a promise left unfulfilled. As he unravels the mystery surrounding the
betrayal and execution of the elite special forces unit he once commanded he is
also forced to protect his estranged father from the personal fallout of his
criminal life.
What
inspired you to write it? It was actually inspired by a first line prompt exercise through a writing group I once
belonged to. The line captured my
imagination and the story grew from there.
What
is the writing process like for you? I'm a
"pantser", so I can't work to an outline unless I get seriously
stuck. For the most part I allow the
story to tell itself. As long as the
characters are speaking to me and the plot is moving in the direction I want it
to go, it's fairly easy. I tend to work
on multiple projects at once – at this point I have three WIP's on the go. If one isn't speaking to me another usually
is. I also try to write every day, and I
belong to an awesome online writing group called Dreaming in Ink whose members
are very supportive and encouraging.
What did you do before you became an author? Anything that paid the rent ;) Being an author is amazing, but it doesn't pay the bills for me yet. That job is as a cashier at a grocery store.
How does it feel to be a published author? It's amazing! There's nothing quite like holding your book in your hand and seeing your name on the cover!
Any
advice for struggling writers? Don't quit. Develop a thick skin. Join a writing group – writing can be a very
solitary occupation and it helps to have people (not your family) to support
and encourage you. As David Gerrold
says: "Be your own biggest fan, and your own worst critic".
Where
do you see book publishing heading? I hate to say
it, but with the advancement of Ebooks, Kindle, Kobo etc, I think the time of
paper and ink books is drawing to a close.
As an author that makes me a little sad, because as I've said there's
nothing quite like holding your own book in your hands. My
personal wish would be to see a balance between the two formats, but I don't
think that's feasible. I guess so long
as books are available in whatever format it's all good.
