Interview With Author Len Saunders

What type of books do you write? Most of my books are fitness/health related.  My latest book, Keeping Kids Fit (lensaunders.com/keepingkidsfit) teaches families about healthy lifestyles including diet, nutrition, sleep, hydration, and exercise.  It is an all-inclusive book to keep kids healthy and fit.  I also have children's books from my "An Adventure In Exercise" series (lensaunders.com/aie) entitled Joey the Kangaroo and Spunky the Monkey.  These books teach young children how to read and exercise simultaneously.  A book I am working on right now will teach children about the circle of life in a fun, loving, non upsetting manner.

What is your newest book about? As mentioned earlier, Keeping Kids Fit is a handy guide that teaches parents and their children about staying healthy.  Childhood obesity is on the rise, along with risk factors for heart disease. Many children now have to combat Type 2 Diabetes, due to the sedentary lifestyles they have become accustomed to in our modern day era.  Education is the key to fix this growing concern, and Keeping Kids Fit hopefully helps fill this void needed.

What inspired you to write it? I have been helping kids over the last 30 years fight obesity with my innovative health/fitness events.  I also volunteer to work with many children who are obese.  Many of my techniques have been quite successful. and I wanted to share other people's success with those who may benefit from it.  Growing up, I had many role models that helped guide and shape my life in a positive way, and I always wanted to give back, and do this for young children in need.

What is the writing process like for you? I am constantly writing down ideas or recording them on my phone.  Then, when I get home, I try to put the thought into words, and build on these concepts.  I usually have to find a quiet room in my house, sit down, and focus on my topic.  Once I write a few pages, I immediately go back and correct my work, as well as add new text to enhance my message.  Sometimes, I may go back to the same few pages a dozen times until I feel it is sending the correct message.

What did you do before you became an author? I teach at an elementary school as a PE Teacher.

How does it feel to be a published author? It feels great, and feels like a great accomplishment.  I never realized how difficult it actually is to write a book.  It takes a lot of time and dedication, but the end result is quite rewarding.

Any advice for struggling writers? Never quit, and always 'take the time to smell the roses.' - Meaning, work hard, but not excessively where it becomes a task instead of an enjoyment.  If your work gets rejected, keeping pushing forward.

Where do you see book publishing heading? I feel like it will become more and more digital.  With iPads and Nooks, it is just so easy for people to download books to their devices.  For me, I enjoy the old fashioned book !
