Napoleon Hill, one of
the greatest motivational authors of all time, and one of the most influential
writers of the 20th century, noted the six key fears that we must
address to avoid feeling held back from pursuing our greatest dreams and
desires. They are the fear of: poverty, criticism, ill health, loss of love,
old age, and death.
In a new book, Stickability; The Power of Perseverance by
Greg S. Reid, authorized by the Napoleon Hill Foundation, the author says we
may fear other things that hold us back, including a fear of: the unknown,
loss, judgment, success, and failure.
So what will get us to
overcome our fears?
Reid suggests you
“create your own reality.” Don’t let others define who you are. He writes:
“Don’t allow other peoples’ opinions or commercial propaganda to fill your mind
with doubts and fear, because this will create your reality. Base your thoughts
on courage and faith, and your mind will make that your reality. Decide to be
in control of your own thoughts.”
He also says you must
direct your thoughts. He writes: “Remember that fear is a state of mind. You
will attract what you focus on, so consciously direct your thoughts to your
definite major purpose and to living a fulfilling life. See yourself as
financially secure, instead of losing yourself in the stack of bills.”
I am a big believer in
motivational books. Dale Carnegie, Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, Anthony
Robbins, Og Mandino, Napoleon Hill, and Richard Carlson are amongst my all-time
empowering authors. I just realized as I listed them that there are no women
in the bunch. Not sure why. Some may say Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret belongs there. Others may have additional favorites. It
doesn’t matter. Whatever leads you to fulfill your destiny is fine by me –
unless you believe your destiny is to be greedy, violent, unethical, hateful,
and selfish. In that case, don’t bastardize the words of others as an excuse to
reach your distorted goals.
Here are my words of
wisdom and inspiration to writers: Just write. Make time to write and do it as
often as you can. Don’t let others tell you otherwise. Writing is rewarding in
its own right, and if you are good at it, you can make money too. No excuses,
no obstacles, no objections. You don’t need anyone’s permission to succeed.
Good luck!
