Should You Market Your Book Like A Scammer?

Here is a thought: To be successful at book marketing, follow the lead of scammers and spammers.

Now, I am not encouraging you to lie, cheat, or steal. Do not break any laws or act unethically. But we can admire the successful traits of those who seek to rob us. They:

*Are persistent — they conduct lots of outreach and do it often, at all hours of the day.

*Sound or look authoritative and official in their presentation.

*Sell on your perceptions, values, emotions, hopes, and dreams. They have nothing to offer except they play up to your wants, needs, and desires.

*Seek to disarm you by saying it is not a sales call when it totally is.

*Make it sound urgent that you not miss a deadline opportunity.

*Imply you are eligible for an exclusive offer.

*Lead with how they can save or make you money, even though the opposite is true.

I often wonder why I get so many spam emails and telemarketer calls. I assume I am not alone. But for this many attempts at scamming people to take place, I can only draw these conclusions:

*It works often enough to make it worth their while, otherwise why do it?

*It costs them almost nothing to try — but their time. All that they need is a smart phone.

*There is little risk of arrest, lawsuits, or punishment, otherwise these operations would be shut down.

*A lot of these spam scammers operate outside of the jurisdiction of the U.S. with impunity.

So, should authors call people to sell a book that doesn’t exist or won’t be delivered? Of course not. But, authors can dedicate a little time every day to solicit connections on social media, call organizations to seek out bulk sale opportunities, visit bookstores and libraries to generate speaking opportunities, and send out emails to the news media in pursuit of book reviews, interviews, feature stories, and byline article opportunities.

Scammers sell garbage. You have something real and of value. Sell it with all of your heart and soul. You can break through. Be persistent and purpose-driven. If some people can sell nothing like it is something, sell something like it is everything.
