Why Not Catch-21 –And The Meaning of Book Titles

They say not to judge a book by its cover, but let’s face it, we do it all the time. The color, texture, and imagery conveyed on the cover can get our attention and draw us to a book. What about the book title? Does this influence us?

I read a book that examined the titles of 50 well-known books, exploring how they got named the way that they did, Why Not Catch-21? The Story Behind The Titles. The author, Gary Dexter, is a contributor to the book pages of several UK papers, The Guardian, The Spectator, and The Sunday Telegraph.

In this 2007 book, readers learn how The Republic, Utopia, Hamlet, Moby-Dick, The Great Gatsby, Lolita, and Catch-22, among other award-winning, critically-acclaimed, best-selling books got their names.

Would it have mattered what these great books were called? Hemingway, Plato, Shakespeare, Melville, and Orwell would likely still be talked about today, regardless of the titling of any of their books. But it is interesting to see what the story is behind the title of each great work.

Why Not Catch-21? Is another exercise to get readers to explore dozens of history-making books that still hold relevance today. Check it out.
