Authors Can Make Headlines Without News

This century, where arguably more information has circulated to more people than in all of the combined years in the history of the world prior to 2000, we find that less news is reported, with media coverage giving way to prejudicial speculation, cheerleading, and distortion. How should authors promote their books in an environment where news is secondary to opinion, and information is lagging behind entertainment?

If you watch a news channel like CNN, Fox, or MSNBC, you will notice a pattern. There is very little news that is being reported on any of these stations. The idea of an exclusive news story is almost forgotten. These streaming and cable shows fill the airwaves with:

* Predictions.
* Rumors.
* Surveys.
* Rankings.
* Reflections on the past.
* Statistical analysis.
* Opinion and commentary.
* Ideas and even fantasies.

Everything but news.

Do you remember that thing with facts and fairness, where a reporter goes out and interviews relevant people to uncover the truth? These stations sure don’t.

Even when they attempt to share news, they do so with bias. They filter what you see and make editorial choices on what they choose to say, how they word it, and what they purposely omit.

When I first started promoting authors, on August 7, 1989, television was the hot medium. Cable TV was busting loose with around-the-clock news. Network news was strong, as were the morning shows. Syndicated talk shows got outrageous attention. TV was where you went to get famous.

Now it is a shell of its former self.

Fewer authors seem to make it on to TV these days. There are not as many shows nor as many opportunities on these shows as there used to be. Viewership is way, way down.  The type of authors coming on as television guests has changed too.

However, authors can be all over the Internet, from blogs, videos, and podcasts to key social media platforms. They can be on radio and covered by newspapers and magazines. They can make headlines without even having anything of news value to share.

The state of the news media is pathetic today, but this environment allows for authors to get exposure and get their books front and center. Even when you have nothing important to say, you can make headlines
