Authors Must Allow For Surprises

Contingency plans.  You need to have them.

Things could change, sometimes suddenly and unexpectedly. You don’t want to be left out in a snowstorm naked, do you?

There is change and initiative that can come willingly from you. There is change that happens out there that you could choose to react to. Then there is stuff that happens to you, where you are forced to make changes.

What is your book marketing plan? Authors have many expectations and hopes, but few plans on how to execute a marketing plan that will yield the results they hope for.

What is your Plan B? Are you being realistic with your time and money as it relates to marketing your book? What happens if things don’t go as planned?

Writers should explore what they will do in each of the following key areas:

* Social Media
* Speaking
* Traditional Media
* Book Awards
* Advertising
* Book Reviews

These plans should include:

* Budgets
* Scheduled activities
* Resources identified
* Goals and a means to measure progress

Ok, so you have all of these plans and your marketing is mapped out. Let’s say things don’t go as planned or you don’t get wished-for results. Now what?

You will need to be ready to try harder, be smarter. And you will need to try new things and change your approach to things. Be certain of this: Authors will be surprised and they will need to find a way to give themselves a second and third shot at success.

You can plan on it!
