Poets & Writers magazine recently noted that an alarming
number of books were banned last year, stating: “The number of book challenges reached
a twenty-year high in 2021, according to the ALA, with 729 challenges to
library, school, and university materials. This rivals the nation's
the spike that spurred the ALA to found Banned Books Week in 1982.”
Luckily, there is a watchdog for banned books. 40 years ago the American Library Association established Banned Books Week.
Banned Books Week will be held September 18 – 24 in 2022. The theme of this year’s event is “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.”
According to www.BannedBooksWeek.com, “Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
“By focusing on efforts across the country to
remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention
to the harms of censorship. The ALA Office for Intellectual
Freedom (OIF) compiles lists of challenged books as
reported in the media and submitted by librarians and teachers across the
country”
Poets & Writers also reported: "We haven't seen censorship on this scale in a very long time--it's an order of magnitude worse than I've ever seen" says Betsy Gomez, Banned Books Week's coalition coordinator, who is helping to track readings, panel discussions, book giveaways, and other activities being held coast-to-coast to sound the alarm about censorship.”
According to www.bannedbooksweek.org, “The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles lists of challenged books as reported in the media and submitted by librarians and teachers across the country. The Top 10 Challenged Books of 2021 are:
1. Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe

We need to all be aware of
how books are under threat – and to fight back. It is hard to believe that in
2022 book censorship is getting worse, but it is. Help defend free thinking and
freedom of expression.
