1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into this book? As I saw the world waking up to the reality of burnout's impact, I noticed that there were books geared towards women and the general population, but none geared specifically towards the special brand of burnout that I faced as a man.
2. What is it about and who is it for? The book is a dissection of the cultural forces that lead men into burnout and keep them stuck there. It also provides a powerful, lasting antidote to burnout in the form of "expansive intimacy." The book is for men who have become consumed by the demands of their career to the detriment of their family, romantic, and social lives.
3. What takeaways might the reader will be left with after reading it? Readers will walk away with an understanding that their situation is not unique or shameful, that our culture has created conditions that lead men into burnout. They'll also learn that breaking through the shame that keeps them stuck in burnout is the path towards lowering their stress, creating new & stronger relationships across their lives, and finding happiness.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The title came from two-word response I gave to my romantic partner when she asked me on our first date what I was looking for in a relationship. The subtitle came from a "throwaway" comment I made on a podcast that helped me realize that practicing intimacy is what makes a guy "tough" these days. The cover design was an inspiration from my designer, Donna Cunningham of Beaux Arts. As soon as I saw the abstract circles, representing the cascade of connections we can build in our lives, I knew I had my cover.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? Don't hold back when you reach a point where what you're about to write makes you scared. Instead, go further than you think you should in that direction.
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? I see a continuing movement towards authors having more freedom in how their books get out into the world, as well as a trend towards content ownership remaining with its creator.
7. What challenges did you overcome to write this book? I wrote this book in about 10 months while running a business, parenting three teenagers half-time, growing a long-distance relationship, dealing with a relative with mental health issues, and staying sharp enough to perform live improv comedy shows once a month.
8. How would you describe your writing style? I think my writing is relatable while pushing the reader to consider new perspectives. I push for a blend of levity and gravity through the ample use of stories that I connect to research and thought-provoking ideas. Ideally, I'm trying to change minds by opening hearts.
9. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? Our world is so fragmented and fraught. The power structures that influence so much of our world are led by men who have been raised under a set of conditions that shame them into closing down, turning away, and burning out. If we are going to reverse the trends that are pulling us apart, we need to provide leaders with a graceful and appealing way to step away from the ways they've been socialized to hold power. Expansive Intimacy offers just that.
