Do You Need To Pay $500/Hour To Learn Phone Etiquette?

Some people pay nearly $500 per hour to a consultant who teaches Generation Z and Millennial workers how to overcome their fear of talking. Can you imagine that?

Well, in our communications-centric world, we know how important it is for an author to be well-versed in every form of sending a message, but where did we go so wrong that young people are too fearful of simply talking to another person on the phone?

According to Business Insider, which broke the story about The Phone Lady charging nearly five Benjamins an hour to help the younger crowd improve their phone etiquette, says:  “Smartphones can do lots of things - but plenty of users make very few actual phone calls on them, if any at all. That’s left many younger workers lacking the confidence to speak effectively on the phone at work.”

What kind of dumbass generation are we raising? They don’t know how to turn the pages of a printed book, can’t talk on the phone, and seek to change the use of every word to the point we no longer know what they mean.

So, our youth can’t talk on the phone. Our older folks can’t tweet. How will anyone communicate with another?

Okay, okay, let me get off my soap box and stop ranting. The story here is not the absurdity that someone is getting lawyer money to teach the equivalent of tying your shoes, but rather, that it’s obvious many people have limitations in how they will communicate effectively.

The lesson? Don't be one of them.

If you are to market your book and promote your ideas, you’ll need to master the act of communicating. This means that you need to be able to:

-Speak to someone via web conferencing, such as zoom

-Talk to anyone by phone

-Carry on a conversation in person

-Interact one-on-one and in group settings

-Email back and forth

-Text fluidly

-Use snail mail and overnight services

-Utilize messengers

-Fax others

-Send communications through various social media platforms

From thank-you notes that are handwritten, to physical holiday cards, and from tweets, skyping, and online conferences, with breakfast meetings, phone calls, and cocktail parties stuffed in between, one must know how and when to use each method of communication.
