There is a bubbling resistance that is building
up against President Donald Trump in our country. Even some of those who voted
for him are starting to feel buyer’s remorse. It is being felt in the book
world.
I received an email
from an author recently, a guy who advertised his book in a trade publication
that led to us discussing promotional possibilities for his book, who told me
he has decided to stop promoting his book and instead vowed to dedicate his time
and money to oppose what he sees as a president running amok like a dictator.
He said: “No American Hitler. That’s my absolute priority for now.“
A month before that, I had a Canadian author
tell me he was not investing money into any book
marketing campaigns until he saw how the tariff war started by the American
president was to play out.
In between, I had someone ask me before they
agreed to hire me for my book promotional services, if I would answer a loyalty
oath question: “Brian, do you support Donald Trump?” She went on to say that
she cannot give money to anyone who may end up funneling donations to the man
in the Oval Office.
Several other authors, whom I spoke with on the
phone, have answered my icebreaking question: “How are you doing?” with tales
of distress, anger, or fear over what Trump is doing.
So, how do people form a resistance movement?
I recommend that people continue to live their
life in a balanced and productive way.
Carve out time to be active and take action; less
time on whining or worrying.
Put your money where your mind is — donate to
groups who can advocate for your causes and beliefs.
Stay informed from multiple sources to get a
factual and balanced vantage point of how things really are.
You don’t have to ask for anything —do what is in
your control to do.
Don’t just ignore or avoid conversations about
politics— appeasement does not work.
Reform the left and get them to the center.
Reform the right, too.
Attend protests, sign petitions, write Congress,
send letters to newspapers, and post on your social media about what you feel
is an injustice.
Use your strongest ability to fight back: write
the wrongs that you see.
Remain positive, resilient, and vigilant – but don’t
obsess over this either.
In addition to doing zero on the economy but
impose tariffs on Americans, allowing an unelected guy with no Senate approval
and billions in conflicts of interest to make illegal and ill-thought mass
firings, and letting a measles epidemic simmer, Trump has managed to alienate
allies and dangerously disrupt the world order. He is truly accomplishing a lot
in his first one hundred days.
We can’t continue with pendulum politics, where
one extreme drowns out the other intermittently. Biden’s woke agenda,
deficit-busting spending, and security-challenging overflowing immigrant influx
were not the best that government can offer, nor is Trump’s overreach to
“correct” things.
We need a move towards a reasonable center and for
the Trump revolution tour to quickly slow down. We need a writer resistance to
save America!
