Are Book Reviews In Decline?

Authors know they need to get positive book reviews to help sell books. Over the years, the book review quest for authors has changed. There are fewer traditional book review publications, and the surviving ones hold less power than they used to. Reviews these days are not so much revered for who says something, but rather the emphasis is on quantity. Book reviews by the pound are lusted for.

35 reviews on amazon are seen as valuable by the author, as if they are an indication their book has merit. Third-party validation used to come because of the weight of the reviewer and the publication, and though there’s still value in who writes a review, it’s clear that the YELP approach is in the lead.

Good Reads, Amazon, and many other review sites now cloud the minds of potential readers. Even reviews that are bought by an author or publisher are getting traction. The book review world is easily manipulated. Authors get family and friends to buy the book and post flattering reviews. Publications pay for reviews and get those they are friendly with in the media to review a book.

The book reviews at major publications show favoritism to publishers that support them with advertising and editorial access. Let’s face it, the process at worst is corrupted by money and relationships, and at best, it’s not a level one. There’s a  bias against self-published books. There are litmus tests such as getting an advance review copy to a reviewer many months prior to publication date -- or it goes into the garbage. There’s also preferential treatment by reviewers for authors whose social media posts or lifestyles align with theirs.

Book reviewing is a burdensome field. Every single day, 4,000 new books are published. At least 1,000 of them are from traditional publishers. Most newspapers and magazines won’t review, over the course of a year, what gets released in a day. What process is used to filter all of these submissions?

A trained, an unbought, and unbiased book reviewer is a prize. He or she is overwhelmed by the challenge to read books as fast as they are released and to have the time and ability to issue an honest, fair, and interesting review.

The gold standard for book reviews turns 125 this year. On October 10, 1896, The New York Times launched its Sunday Book Review Supplement. The Sunday Book Review these days is a little thinner than it used to be, but it still is the most desired book review publication. I still enjoy reading the book review section, almost as much as reading the books that were reviewed. These reviews are meaty and give you enough evidence to determine whether a book is for you. At least there’s one place book purists and traditionalists can still look to for an honest assessment of a book.

I give the NYTBR five stars!

Should Authors Turn To Porn For Marketing Advice?

Have you seen some great movies, such as A Few Good Men? Malcolm X? The Terminator? Forrest Gump?

How about A Few Hard Men? Malcolm XXX? The Sperminator? Forrest Hump?

The porn industry is notorious for naming its skin films after popular, well-known and liked movies. Why? Their humorous puns or play on words show their craftiness. The title’s familiarity makes us associate a positive outcome from one movie with another. Besides, even if you don’t know the original movie name, these monikers still sound catchy and work on their own.

Authors need to think a little more like porn producers. No, I don’t mean you should worship the objectification of humans, nor do I recommend you should start taking your clothes off to earn a buck, though I know it can pay better than writing books sometimes, but I am saying that their witty and playful tool to market their films is commendable.

Authors need to apply some of that thinking when crafting press release headlines, email subject lines, blog post headers, and social media quips. The name of the game is book marketing is to get one’s attention – and then to say something worthy of others placing their focus on you.

Below are a few dozen catchy adult film titles. Perhaps you have even seen some of these films – or now have a shopping list for Christmas. In any event, look, learn, and customize as you see fit to meet your marketing approach. Adopt the mindset of puns when crafting the headlines of your next social media post – and maybe even your next book’s name.

Guaranteed: Authors Who Do This One Thing Shall Succeed!

What is the one thing any author, in any genre, can do to successfully market his or her book amidst record levels of competition for book sales or even to just get people’s attention?

Manufacture momentum!

How do you do that?

* Tell a friend.

* Make new friends.

* Repeat.

Give them something to:

Share — a useful link back to free content on your web site that they can share.

Do — guide them on exactly what you want them to do; set a deadline; share a goal; compensate if necessary.

Feel Your Mission — help them see your vision and feel inspired to adopt your mission as theirs.

Say — no one will say what you think will work best unless you share suggested statements, offer resources to share, and explain how to make the sale.

Give them an incentive to help you:

* Avoid guilt for not helping.

* Blackmail — just kidding, kind of.

* Praise their efforts and thank them profusely, publicly and privately.

* Call in favors or beg for new ones.

* Pay for their efforts.

* Share in profits of results.

* Trade something that they perceive to be of value but minimally costly to you.

Charge others up so they can go the extra mile for you:

* Display emotions.

* Be methodical.

* Show energy.

* Share success stories.

* Act with confidence.

* Share hope and optimism.

Supplement your efforts by:

* Advertising in a targeted way.

* Buying reviews.

* Seeking out third-party testimonials.

* Using a book promoter to secure media exposure for your book.

* Aggressively taking to social media

* Seeking out speaking engagements.

* Hiring an influencer if affordable.

Never give up.

If something fails, try again. And again.

Then try a new approach or a whole new method.

Simply believe you can do this. Then go out and prove it.

Manufacture your momentum to get up that hill. Right now. Stop thinking about it, planning, researching, talking... just do it!
