Here's How Any Author Can Find Beta Readers

Is your book really any good? Can it be made better?

Some authors and publishers consult with readers before deciding to publish a book, often tweaking a manuscript based on critical feedback. Much like the way Hollywood pre-screens TV episodes and movies before they get released, authors can benefit from having some helpful insights before they determine whether to commit to publishing their book as is.

Authors ban use a beta reader program not just to product-test their works, but to rally the ginny-pig reader to become part of the first group to talk it up for the book. Not only might their readers give you constructive criticisms, they can provide early testimonials and reviews that can be circulated during the pre-launch. Encouraging them to spread a positive word-of-mouth is a useful means to build up hype.

So how do you get a galley to your beta readers? You can simply send them a pdf or use NetGalley or GoodReads to share the manuscript for review.

Authors can locate beta readers by:

·         Asking friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors to be your readers

·         Inquiring with your network to have them share with their connections and referrals

·         Locating existing groups, associations, non-profits, or companies that would reflect a natural interest in your subject matter

·         Looking up reviewers on Amazon of competing book titles (click on each reviewer to find their public profile)

·         Posting to writer forums and communities, such as Absolute Write, Writer’s circle, or The Writer’s Workshop

·         Befriending other writers or professors

·         Seeking them out on Beta Readers and Critique Partners Facebook Group

·         Going to GoodReads and hitting up its public group specifically designed to find them

·         Asking members of a local writer’s association

You can also hire beta readers. You can post a beta reader job at ziprecruiter.com, for example. You can also find them at upwork.com and fiverr.com.

Other sites that offer beta readers include:

·         Writerfulbooks.com

·         CPMatchmaking.com

·         NathansBrandsfordForum.com

·         Guru.com

·         YourBetaReader.cm

·         NewCritiqueCircle.com

Good luck in your efforts to find beta readers and may you benefit from their helpful corrections and positive reviews.
