Must Authors Be Ready To Speak Again?


One thing that the pandemic has done in the last two years is mute authors from speaking in-person. Almost non-existent are bookstore signings, library appearances, and public gatherings at conventions, seminars, conferences, workshops, and book fairs. These have been driving forces to push book sales and agendas. Though silenced for now, they will rise out of hibernation in 2022. Are authors ready to hit the road? 

Authors have always had to overcome these challenges;

*Fear of speaking
*Ability to persuade and influence audiences
*Securing speaking engagements
*Getting people to attend their event

Well, now you can add a fear of getting corona to the list.

But the alternatives are not great, namely not to speak or morph towards virtual speaking.

Authors need to gear up in anticipation for what the book marketplace will be like in 2022.  You must assume speaking opportunities will return. Position yourself for that to happen.

First, get your shit in order. Have a speaker’s kit updated and at the ready. This would include information about you, your book, topics that you speak on, testimonials for you as a speaker, your photo, video footage of you speaking, and a list of where you spoke.

Second, research where you want to speak: locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Once Musk and Bezos perfect solar system travel, look beyond Earth.

Third, identify what type of entities will welcome you. Is it bookstores? Libraries? Non-profits? Schools? Businesses? Government agencies? Religious houses? Other?

Fourth, find contact information for specific organizations so that you know whom to hit up.

Fifth, develop short but customized letters or emails to be sent one by one to your targeted lists. Make sure you speak to the unique desires, needs, and personality of that group.

To win a speaking engagement speak with conviction, confidence, and commitment. Develop a network of contacts. Identify resources that can help you. Market yourself with goals and a purpose. People will sense your drive and vision and will want a ticket to your plane ride.
