You may not be confused with Spider-Man or Batman, but you too need to tell your story of how you came to be, what your writings stand for, and where your driving force comes from.
Authors, shape your public persona so that it rings true, even if it is written with a little creative license. This is your chance not to sound like a resume or clinical cv. Tell us who you really are — in the way we need and want to hear it.
This story can be reflected in numerous ways. In you web site’s or press kit’s bio section. In the back page bio of your book. In a social media profile. Really, whenever you are introducing yourself to others, whatever the setting, format, or medium may be, tell your story. Not just facts, figures, titles, and dates. Get to the substance of who you are and define your writer’s core.
That’s right, the storyteller needs to tell a story about him or herself.
Who can you model your origin story off of? You will find them in many places, from the menus of famous restaurants to corporation employee manuals. You see them in book trailers and in advertisements.
They create an image that endears you to their product or service. These stories emphasize a popular value, desired trait, or an image of beauty, power, or love — and seek to associate the storyteller with these strong ideals. Whether through osmosis or by association, they want to be viewed as something or someone amazing.
They want you to be psychologically or spiritually connected to them. The storyteller wants you to feel emotionally invested in them. Find a way to really shape your story into an interesting, inspiring, dramatic, and unique tale.
A good origin story may involve:

A time and place where over the years there was a transformation
*
Overcoming the odds to succeed
*
Standing up against the powers that be
*
Coming back from a loss
*
Dealing with death, injury, pain, or bad news
*
Being a victim or hero — or both
*
Mentions of courage, conviction, and vision
*
Being on a mission of sorts
*
Referencing values that we all cherish
*
Linking yourself to things or people that are greater than you
*
Highlighting a real accomplishment
*
Showing how you make a difference
*
Infusing psychology and spirituality
*
Challenging the norms and daring to be controversial
What
is your origin story? Everyone has one but not every author tells it. You can.
