* Traditional sports.
* Shopping.
* Musicians.
* Drinking alcohol.
* Eating comfort foods.
These five factors combined to turn Super Bowl
56 into a mega-ratings hit. Nielsen registered 167 million people watching some
or all of the classic annual football ritual. That is one half of our country
that was devoted to a singular event. You just don’t see anything like that
anymore — not in other sports or with a movie or TV show.
So, what bonds authors with their readers, the
way Americans tune into a football game??
Well, there is no singular event, like a Super
Bowl, to unify people or to promote books. But we have many connecting places
and events to grow the book landscape.
Look at our cultural institutions, from schools
and libraries, to bookstores and book fairs, there are many places and moments
when authors and readers connect, where a book finds its reader and a reader
finds her books.
Aside from the physical world, the virtual one
is rich in opportunities for readers and writers to bond, from webinars and
digital conferences to online book clubs and forums where books are discussed,
readers gather, and writers speak. Don’t forget the millions of websites,
blogs, YouTube channels, and podcasts created by and about authors — and fans —
for the book world to partake in.
There is no shortage of places or opportunities
for readers to interact with authors and bond over books. Converting those
interactions and experiences into book sales, however, is another matter. That
goes to the quality of one’s price, competition, timing, and offer. But the
opportunity is there.
No excuses. Sure, it takes time, effort, and
money, but authors can find their Super Bowl moment when they go looking for
it.
Get
out there and interact with your potential readers. They exist. They are for
the taking. You just need to start showing up.
