Why Do Authors Pursue Fame?

What makes authors think they are deserving of critical praise, financial success, and fame?

Many authors will say they love to write and/or that they have a story to tell that they believe has to get out. Others see writing books as a means to a bigger end, where the book promotes a business or brand. Or the book generates leads to sell their courses, paid speaking gigs, and other content products. Or the book is a way to promote a message or achieve some political aim.

But almost all of the authors fully believe their book could be a movie or a streaming show. They think it is worthy of book awards, hitting bestseller lists, and getting covered by major news media.

Why?

Our books are connected to our lives, as writers. They are us. We certainly do not want to be rejected or ignored as writers, do we, for it means our essence is being dismissed. Our creativity, intellect, experiences, and beliefs are wrapped between the covers of the books that we write. When our book bombs, pieces of ourselves get obliterated in the process.

Perhaps the process of wanting attention starts young.

I just came back from picking up my daughter from camp.  She had spent six weeks at a sleep-away in the Catskills that specializes in the theatrical arts — theater, music, dance, film, and singing. All of these kids do their best to channel their inner Adele, Reece Witherspoon, and Misty Copeland.

But only a few stand out, even at the young ages of 12, 13, or 14. And even fewer will pursue this as a career and an even tinier number will experience any kind of success. They compete with each other and with themselves to be the best they can be.

They have courage, heart, and soul. They believe in their talents, much like the way authors do. They pursue fame and applause with every song, dance, and scene.

Authors should feel deserving of fame, but they need to go out and earn it. A book that warrants attention and praise needs its author to market and promote it, tirelessly and shamelessly.

Authors may pursue fame for any number of reasons. And their book may really be special. But nothing happens unless the author seeks fame and fortune, so park your laziness, insecurities, and excuses, and get out there and get what you deserve!
