Never Again Is Now For America and Israel

There comes a time in everyone’s life when you feel compelled to take a public stand on an issue near and dear to your heart. For me, that moment came on Nov. 14th in Washington, D.C. in the March For Israel. It is believed to be the largest pro-Israel gathering in US history, with over a quarter-million gathering at the National Mall.

Though I had never marched in Washington DC, imagery of Martin Luther King, Jr.s famous march 60 years ago, and his “I have a dream” speech played out in my mind as my teen-aged daughter and I made it to our nation’s capital.

Nearly 300,000 were estimated to have showed up to chant slogans like “Bring Them Home Now” (in reference to 200+ hostages), Never Again is Now!” (Connecting the mantra of Holocaust survivors to today), to “U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A.”

What was nice was being out on a beautiful, sunny day, in a peaceful setting, walking side-by-side with other moral-minded, well-meaning  people to stand up for some core values: support our ally and the only Middle East democracy, Israel, fight anti-Semitism, and protest the genocidal cruelty of the terrorist operation, Hamas.

Being around the iconic buildings, including the Washington Monument, the Capitol Building, and the Smithsonian, each filled with other people’s history on a day that was just for us Jews, left me feeling proud. This march felt like I was living history, and it was quite special.

There were signs of Gazafitti, including Free Gaza spray-painted onto the fronts of several government buildings and even on the temporary set-up of Porta Potties — with one letter appearing on each potty. But thankfully, there were no counter-protests or heckling, and no violent outbursts.

A people with a long history just wants to live in peace — and this rally was a chance to speak up for a group that has a lengthy resume of being villainized, ostracized, evicted, threatened, treated with prejudice, and nearly pushed to extinction.

From Haman to Hitler to Hamas, and from Egyptian slavery and Spanish Inquisition, to Nazi Germany and Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, Jews all over the world know what is going on, what is at stake today. The march unifies not just Jews, but hopefully sends a message to haters and should rally people of good character.

Yes, there will need to be a new and better future for Palestinians, and in many ways, Israel is helping to liberate them from the terror clutches of Hamas with this battle. But this war, now, is about Israel’s security, Jewish safety worldwide, and America’s freedom from terrorism.

This was not my first protest march. My daughter and I previously had done the Women’s March in NYC, nearly seven years ago, shortly after Trump assumed the Oval Office; we also participated in a black rights march in New Rochelle, right after the George Floyd murder in 2020; and the Gay Pride Parade in NYC, 2021. But as I am not black, gay, or a woman, I never felt I had to march for who I am.

Until now.

Being in DC to take a stand for the Jews seemed like the right thing to do. It took us over five hours to arrive by bus — and another five to go home — plus 40 minutes each way on a train, two 15-minute walks, and 15 minutes each way by car. That is a long day, leaving just enough time to attend a two-hour rally. And it was all worth it.

Never again is now. For Israel. For America.
