Presenting Your Story To The Media

People want to buy into a good story so figure out how to best present yours. They obviously have to be interested in the subject you write on but they also want to feel they can trust you. They want  to like you.

Of course your credentials will sway them. The number of years you have worked in the industry you write on is important. Your awards, education, training, and professional experiences are to determine whether to invest in you.

They also want to develop a personal profile of you. They want to know of the person behind the writer, the speaker, the consultant. So tell a story.

Reveal only what you care to share but convey your words in a way that keeps readers engaged.

Think About What Others Might Want To Know:
·         Any funny stories to share
·         Biggest accomplishments
·         Greatest failures
·         If you ever thought of leaving the field
·         How you would change your industry or the world
·         What your hobbies are
·         Where you grew up
·         If you are married or have kids
·         What schools you attended
·         Your insights on trends or worthwhile predictions

People want to know you are genuine and real but they also want you to be the authority and expert. They want a balance – the best of both worlds – where you come across as having all the answers and yet revealing a certain vulnerability or imperfection that allows people to identify with and relate to you.
