Do Authors Need To Pay Bribes To Succeed?

There are many tolls an author may have to pay these days. Just take a look:

  • They could self-publish and pay for it.
  • They can hire a book marketer.
  • They can pay for advertising
  • They can get book reviews or some media coverage in a pay-for-play manner.
  • They can pay people to buy their books and hit a best-seller list.

Heck, they can pay someone to write their book for them! There is no end to what one can pay for. Welcome to America!

But what about bribing people to succeed?

Well, let’s call it an ethical bribe. Not suggesting anything illegal or even immoral here. Come explore with me.

What you want is to create partnerships. You must give others an incentive to help you. You can pay them a commission for a sale or a lead. You can do favors for those who help you. Forget about barriers. Look around for people or groups that you can partner with. Everyone can be in a relationship with you. You can even work with competitors, sworn enemies, or people who don’t even like your book. All you need to do is find a common-ground incentive to inspire one to help you.

Of  course, some will help you with no expectation of anything in return. They like you or consider you a friend or they believe in your book or message. But many people in key positions will not be so altruistic or even have you on their radar unless you can show you bring value to them.

You can beg, barter, or buy anything to help your cause.

Will you give something in a way to get something in return/?

Here are a few common practices:

  • Give out books and hope people post positive reviews or click on your site so they could be sold something else.
  • Make a trade -- give free seminars or consultations and hope to get others to do something for you, such as share your message with their list of connections.
  • Offer to cross-promote others.
  • Market their book, product, or service -- and they do the same for you.
Look at a bribe as an incentive, as some reason people will go the extra mile for you. Bribe as many people as you can and then reap the windfall!
