Interview With Psychotherapist & Author Judith Halbreich

  1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into a book?

Upon my mother’s death, thousands of crying followers crowded the church to mourn the woman that many considered to be a modern-day Saint.

At her funeral one of her followers pulled me aside and said, “you ought to write a book about her, there is no one else on earth like her.”

I intimately witnessed the hardships and tribulations of a penniless catholic divorcee who initially lost faith but then refined old-time Western and Eastern spiritually to develop to new strengths.  Most importantly I witnessed my mother into a condition of pure transparency and joy.  Every moment that she spent with us and with others, every gesture of their body was an invocation to and of God’s presence within and around us.

People who saw Mary spoke of her interstitial state of existence, as if she was a vibrating membrane between the mundane and the eternal, this world and the next, the conditional and the absolute.  It was as if she was connected to the divine to the fullest extents that we humans can tolerate without leaving our bodies permanently.  The radiance that illuminated her was of a love that filled her up to overflowing: a love bestowed unreservedly and without end. spiritual transformation towards the last few years of her life.  She appeared transparent She taught her techniques of acceptance and overcoming pain to thousands of her disciples.

  1. What is it about and who is it for?

The Audacity to be Divine -A Soul’s Journey towards Illumination is a compelling and inspirational book about the arduous journey towards transformation and illumination.

The book describes the transformation of an ordinary suburban housewife to a charismatic activist and a spiritual leader.

The book is for anyone hungry to find meaning in their lives.  Whether you want to embark on a spiritual quest for enlightenment, or just want to curl up with a beautiful story about a high heel-wearing, influential, female change-agent-the ultimate tale of girl power and grace.

  1. What do you hope the reader will be left with after reading it? What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers?

Never say, “I am not good enough to write my story.” Imagine the story completed and in the bookstores.  Most importantly, believe in yourself.

  1. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?

This is a $10,000 answer. I would have to take a survey and talk with many people in all walks of life and cultures to get a glimpse of the trends and industry.

  1. What challenges did you overcome to write this book?

I had to overcome my negative thoughts of not being a good enough writer.  Another big challenge was finding the time to research and write while working full time and raising a family.

  1. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours?

“The Audacity to be Divine” is an easy-to-read novel written for contemporary skeptics and truth seekers who can identify with the true intimate story of the eternal quest for spiritual truth in the context of our time-a time of crisis, uncertainties, and mounting paradoxes.  It is a time of reflection.  It offers guidance and hope to anyone in search of faith, healing and joy.
