Interview With The Author of Jayne Mansfield Biography, Eve Golden

1. What motivated you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and turning it into a book? I've wanted for years to do a biography of Jayne Mansfield--she is not only tragic, but FUN, and there are so many interviews with her (print and on YouTube), that getting her own words and personality into a book would be doable.

2. What is it about and who is it for? It's for anyone who loves movies and camp and mid-century pop culture and chihuahuas and lovable, screwed-up, insightful but slightly warped movie stars.

3. What do you hope the reader will be left with after reading it? I want them to laugh! And cry! And go out and find her movies! I think the reader will come away from this book genuinely liking Jayne, but wanting to shake some sense into her.

4. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? Don't do it for the money, as there IS no money in writing. Only write because you "have" to.

5. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? There is more self-publishing, which can be a mug's game. Unless you are willing and able to promote, advertise, professionally edit, ruthlessly cut, and distribute your work, I would advise going with a company that has professionals who specialize in those services.

6. What challenges did you overcome to write this book? Jayne's children politely declined to cooperate with the book, which threw me. But her eldest, Jayne Marie, had given numerous interviews in the past, and those were helpful.  Also, so many stories and quotes by and about Jayne were invented by her PR people, so separating truth from fluff was a challenge.

7. If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? Even if they don't like my writing, people will love the 70-plus photos of Jaynie being divoon!
