5 Things Smart Authors Do

For authors seeking to succeed, they will need to call upon five assets — and some luck. Have a look at what it takes to see your book in the hands of more readers:

Strategy

Every author needs a good strategy and to have a blueprint of what to do when it comes to marketing a book. Set achievable goals and impose deadlines on yourself. Plan out what you will do — with a timeline — and identify which resources will be needed. Think through, logically, what your goals are, and what needs to be done to incrementally get towards reaching them. Look at each key area — speaking, news media, social media, book awards, and advertising — and devise a plan — identify tactics, resources, challenges, opportunities, and strengths.

Skill

What is your level of ability to do something — anything. Step one: identify what needs to be done, which skills are needed, and assess what you are capable of. Will you need to acquire more knowledge or training? Do you need to experiment and try new things? Will you have to outsource certain aspects?

Effort

Do you take action?  You must move to take action over contemplation. Be consistent and persistent in your efforts. Act with a sense of urgency. Recruit others to help you.  It is a numbers game: keep trying; try harder, be smarter.

Opportunity

Life is about the opportunities that come upon you, that you recognize, and that you seize. It is also about creating your own opportunity. How ready are you to see and respond to opportunities? Are you looking hard enough? Do you contemplate how to craft your own chance to make something special happen?

Mindset

How you think will dictate how you act. Stay motivated. Feel optimistic. Expect success. Demand it. Do not accept NO. Act with passion and enthusiasm. Speak with conviction. Act as if you are who you want to be. You don’t need anyone’s permission to succeed.
