How Authors Overcome Obstacles

Authors, to be successful, will need to overcome many, many obstacles, burdens, and confrontations. Do they have what it takes to endure and defeat the difficult moments, big and small, that they inevitably must confront in order to get a book written, published, and promoted?

Authors will need a number of resourceful traits to win out over the odds. How they perceive things to be can dictate their game plan, action taken, and their will to thrive.

Too often, we let our emotions take over how we perceive our reality. Fear, anger, and frustration can settle in when we need courage, love, and resilience. Where some see a crisis, others see a mere chore, while others see an opportunity for something good. Desperation or powerlessness mustn’t rule an author. Hope, confidence, and conviction should instead guide their every action.

“Nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so,” so says Shakespeare. He’s 100% right. You make of things what you want. You have the power to determine how you’ll act, think, feel, and speak. That’s a lot of power.

We choose how to see things and how to determine what we’ll do. We don’t have to be slaves to the obstacles. We can simply navigate how we want to pursue our goals.

Of course, where there’s a real issue or a burden, we can’t just ignore it. But how do we look at these obstacles and find a way to get beyond them?

  1. You can seek to be objective, identify resources to solve or combat it, or calculate that it’s a losing cause and move onto a winnable battle.
  1. Control your emotions. Stick to the facts and figure out what’s possible, probable, and profitable. Pack your feelings and simply look at facts.
  1. Be optimistic and positive -- see the bright side to an opportunity.
  1. Ask others for help, even pay an expert for guidance.
  1. Focus on what can be controlled and not on what can’t.
  1. Re-set your goals and change your standards. This doesn’t mean settle for less, but to recalculate the value pf things.
  1. Acknowledge that anything worth pursuing will have setbacks, losses, challenges, and demanding tasks. Toughen up and work hard. Be savvy and passionate.

Whatever comes your way, embrace it. You are a writer and nothing comes easily.

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always try just one more time.”

-Thomas A. Edison

“I’ve learned that people will forget what said, people will forget about what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

-Carl W. Buehner
