Interview With Money Addiction Author Thomas Cridland

Why did you write this book? I wrote Million Dollar Addict to help and entertain. I wanted to provide guidance to aspiring entrepreneurs, people who want to make millions. I also wanted to share how I’ve managed to conquer an addiction to alcohol that nearly killed me.

What is it about and who is it really for? The book is about my own experiences with addiction, business and money. It's for anyone who wants to gain insight into the dark side of the entertainment and fashion industries, the less glamorous consequences of living the high life and how alcoholism can affect mental health and wellbeing.

What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book? I hope that readers will come away with a better understanding of the challenges that come with addiction and the realization that mental health issues can manifest in anyone, regardless of their status or success. I want my story to provide some inspiration and motivation for those who may be struggling with their own demons. That said, I am not trying to play the victim or suggest I deserve sympathy for being a drunk. There’s no need to get out the world’s smallest violin; this is a book about taking a long, hard look in the mirror.

How did you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The title, Million Dollar Addict, was suggested by one of the subscribers to my Youtube channel, where I share my podcasting, commentary, comedy, original music and covers of Elton John. The cover design was put together by a wonderful artist called Calin and it encapsulates my addiction to alcohol, my extravagance, and there are also some nods to Nigel Olsson and Elton John in there.

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers? My advice would be to write what you know and don't be afraid to be vulnerable and honest with your readers. It can be challenging to put your personal struggles out there, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.

What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading? I think that audiobooks and e-books are becoming increasingly popular, but I still believe that there will always be a market for physical books. As for the publishing industry, I think we will see more self-publishing and indie authors breaking through in the coming years.

Were there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book? Absolutely. My own struggles with addiction and my business story provide all the content here, and it was important for me to share my story in a way that was as honest as possible. That said, I don’t air dirty laundry in the book. Not too much of it!

How would you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar to? My writing style is straightforward and honest, with a focus on personal storytelling. I've been inspired by Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas and Felix Dennis’ How To Get Rich.

What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? One of the biggest challenges was being vulnerable and sharing personal details that were difficult to talk about. It was also a challenge to balance the storytelling with the advice on how to get sober and make some money.

If people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? Put simply, in an age of airbrushed, snake-oil books sold by people who haven’t really done anything, this is a warts and all account of what it is really like to start businesses and turn them into money-spinners when you don’t have connections or expertise. This is for the entrepreneurs who are interested in enjoying the ride, for those who value the process and experiences. It’s also for anyone who is having a tough time with their mental health and their drinking.
