Help Make America Literate Again

Literacy Teaching Methods Failed Millions Of Kids

Literacy in the United States is relatively high globally, but far below where it should be. There are many reasons why, but none more inexcusable than the dissing of teaching reading through phonics. Thankfully, a huge change has occurred in the last few years to revert back to the scientifically proven and most basic way to teach reading to kids: phonetically.

The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia finally was dissolved after four decades of using less effective methods. Lucy Calkins, the literacy professor and curriculum entrepreneur, sold a bunch of crap that downplayed the use of phonetics.

42 states, since 2019, passed laws that essentially say to use phonetics in the teaching of reading. Simply, there must be evidence-based results for teaching methods, and Calkins’ work did not pass muster. Now we need to untrain or retrain our teachers so that they don’t continue to fail our young minds.

Even in a country like the United States, where pre-K to 12 public education is free to all, 36 million adults can’t maintain employment because of their inability to read and write in English proficiently.
