An Extreme Book Celebration

I joined two friends this past weekend to attend the Boston Book Festival, where book-lovers and people of thought and ideas gathered to celebrate the written word. You can never go wrong being surrounded by books and those who read, write, and publish them.

So, what exactly is the Boston Book Festival?

It describes itself as: “Celebrating the power of words to stimulate, agitate, unite, delight, and inspire, the Boston Book Festival presents year-round events culminating in an annual festival that promotes a culture of reading and ideas and enhances the vibrancy of our city.”

The one-day affair offered a few street blocks of booths, each selling books on behalf of a publisher or an organization involved in the book world. There were also several dozen panel discussions on a variety of topics that were presented several surrounding buildings, including a beautiful old church and a library.

We attended an interesting panel discussion on extremism, consisting of three authors, one of whom was former CNN commentator Jeffrey Toobin, who was hawking his book,

Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism.

The discussion touched upon not just radicalization but about how ideas and views get shared through symbols, words, and images circulating in the media, online, and through social media. It left you feeling hopeless, that so many messages of lies, half-truth, ignorance, and violence are getting through without filters, safeguards, or controls.

The world has always been a dangerous place and as the Israel-Palestine conflict plays out, a holy war is brewing, pitting Israel against terrorists and garbage regimes that fund or supply them with weapons, like Iran and North Korea. The US is deeply entangled in the fray as well. Suddenly, we may see a true war on terrorism, a battle against the Isis, Al Quada, Hezbollah, Hamas, PLO factions that wreak havoc across the Middle East, America, and Europe. Talk about extremism!

Books need to show us the way out. May books show us how to negotiate for peace, to navigate the understanding of violent and hate-filled histories, to promote love over hate. A book festival that gets us reading and discussing things is certainly a good start.
