What Does Book Marketing Mean To Authors?

How do most writers view the concept of marketing a book?

Marketing a book, to an author:

1.      Overwhelms them.

2.      Feels discouraging

3.      Is too expensive

4.      Is not enjoyable

5.      Is too time-consuming

6.      Does not provide enough results

7.      Feels unnatural

8.      Makes them full of fear

9.      Has no sense of urgency

10.  Seems random and unfocused

11.  Is not often prioritized, competing with their writing efforts

12.  Is a mystery that only pros can handle

13.  Seems exhausting

14.  Comes off as an intimidating task

Authors need to adjust their attitude, game plan, schedule, and approach to book marketing.

What will help them do this?

1.      Give yourself permission to experiment, fail, and succeed.

2.      Press a reset button and make a new marketing plan.

3.      Hire some help, especially in areas you fall short in.

4.      Take time to learn how to do something. Get skilled.

5.      Get support and help from a coach, therapist, friend, or colleague.

Book marketing, for authors, should come to mean these things:

·         An empowering opportunity to sell my book.

·         A means to get an important message out.

·         A way to brand myself and gain career opportunities.

·         A moment to shine and get seen by the masses.

Book marketing, admittedly, may not always be fun, fruitful, or worth the time and money one may put into it. But the alternative is writer suicide – death by doing nothing and allowing your book to die a slow, quiet death of obscurity, rejection, and criticism.

Marketing should mean opportunity to authors, the opportunity to be heard and seen the chance to grow and prosper, and a moment where our voice can be heard and matter.

We can assume our books are going nowhere upon their publication – unless you change the narrative and defy your supposed destiny. Wake up, get out there, and fight for your book. Your beliefs, convictions, and enthusiasm for your book can guide you and push you to greater heights.

Yes, book marketing should mean everything to an author whose book is everything to them.
