Take Your Book To The Moon!
The Moon landing’s 50th anniversary on July 20th honored not just a victory in space exploration or the marvel of advanced technology, but a time and moment when a dream was realized and heroes were born. In tandem with that celebration, let’s use this time to encourage writers and publishers to learn some lessons from this historic event and apply them to their craft.
1. Have a Moon shot.
Dream big or go home. Be bold, be first. Take a chance. Shoot for a best-seller, not just to be published.
2. Go where no one has gone before.
Write something unique, different and new. Experiment.
3. Have a clear objective.
Just as the American space program rallied its assets and minds on a set mission, you too can focus your thoughts, actions, and resources on a singular goal to write, publish, and promote your book successfully.
4. Take a journey with no road map.
No reason to follow anyone’s footsteps. Blaze your own course for others to follow.
5. Understand the challenges and risks – then move forward.
Be aware of what you can lose or gain by putting your book out there – then toss caution to the wind and go for it!
6. Tolerate ambiguity.
Even if all of the steps to your mission are not clearly defined or known, let nothing stop you. You can’t wait for everything to line up perfectly. Keep moving ahead.
7. Improvise as you go.
Prepare for your trip but be prepared for a detour.
8. Enjoy the sights.
While you undertake the publishing and promoting of your book, seek to enjoy what you experience.
9. Teamwork leads to success.
One astronaut didn’t fly – there was a crew – and a team back home to support them. Lean on others – friends, family, and paid professionals to get you where you need to be.
10. Look back and marvel at what you’ve done.
Imagine viewing the Earth from the Moon! You’ll look back at how far you’ve grown as a writer and feel proud of the view.
